The Official Authors' Hangout Summer Lovin' 2025 Contest Support Thread

I always feel like I am too inexperienced to critique someone else's work. I'm barely hanging on myself.
You're good at getting around to stories and leaving nice comments though! It's much appreciated. (y)

I wasn't really meaning that we all need to leave critiques. But I find it really helpful myself when people mention what they liked / liked a lot / orgasmed to, or some things that could have been stronger or better executed. It all helps towards the next story.

Thanks and agreed. I feel like anyone putting in the effort should get a nice comment and a good score from me at least, although I don't usually do it for categories I don't write in (primarily I/T which I cannot get into)

Definitely is good when people leave a comment that shows they have read at least part of the tale, and definitely can be helpful to point out things you (I) have missed, or gotten wrong

Thanks for your comment, and for @nicksouth's. They were appreciated.

You should be getting lots more comments! Yours is a finely nuanced story that really shows a strong understanding of work relationships and the boundaries that keep a story in the real world, making the fictional bits credible and hot. You made some great choices IMHO to keep it real. I'm really glad I read it, and next time I'm thinking about jumping the shark, I'll remember that boundaries can work really well :)

Thanks, but you probably shouldn't worry a lot about boundaries. Erotica is mostly fantasy anyway.

Sure, but it's like sci-fi a bit, isn't it? You don't break all the laws of physics if you want to write a good sci-fi story. You break just one or two laws, you do it convincingly, and you build a story around that. Otherwise you're in 'with one bound, they were free' territory.

I’m new to writing fiction, let alone erotic stories. And have never hopped into this community. I very much appreciate the contests. I did a Nude Day one too, got it in just at the buzzer, especially since it first got bounced back (for good reason). So set a goal to write a summer love’n one in early. Glad I did! It’s getting some good scores, but no comments yet. Would welcome any tips, comments, or concerns people may share. Here it is: More than summer housemates . Feel free to also check out my other two stories.

Another question though… is there a place where the upcoming contests are listed? I’d like to give myself time again and enter in more.

Cheers and happy to meet you all

The list is at the top of the Author's Hangout in a pinned thread named The Lit 2025 Special Contest Schedule. Laurel updates it annually, usually in December.

That's probably all true, but I'm not sure where it gets to be too many in erotica. A lot of stories are just crazy that way, and they aren't even in SF/F.

hi all, it's been a long time since I last submitted a story, what does "pending" state mean? Does that mean it has been cleared to publish or that it's still waiting? Thanks in advance!

It is still in review. When it’s scheduled for publication, you will see it as New and Published, and the date will be the go-live day.

Welcome back! "Pending" means it's still waiting for approval. You can check on the story while it's in pending and you'll get a release date once it's approved, but the release will be delayed if you change anything while it's pending.

And now I see its got a new tag and a publish date of 9/1 and still in pending (presumably until it gets published on the first).

Thanks all!

Good luck everybody, happy contesting!

Thanks you two! I should have refreshed my browser to see your replies. I appreciate the good info!

Last year, a ton of 1- or 2-bombs in my contest entry got purged as fraudulent during the last few days and the story flipped from under 3 to one of my better rated stories.

With that experience though, I wonder how many of the downvotes will remain as "legit" this year. I already heard that contest voting is harsher than usual, so while my ratings are below average so far compared to my other stories, I suppose it might still be within the margin of regular contest voting. Guess I'll see.

I'm at 700+ votes and the last few comments have not been favorable
I am may still be fairly naive but reading the comments on your story is so fascinating. One gets the impression some people judge your characters as if they were real people and thusly blame you for creating awful people like that (rather, you know, being an author doing their job)

To all that responded to my query a few weeks ago, thank you!

Before August 15 I never saw any indication whether my story was approved or reviewed, but it published with the first batch of stories. It was sitting in "Pending" status for days, and I was reading that as pending review by an editor for publication eligibility. Is that the correct way to read that status, or does "Pending" mean something else? For a first contest entry I'm not disappointed with the results: a little over 4k reads, 38 votes and a 4.81 average rating. It only earned two comments, but both were positive.

I waited until today to post any follow-up because (a) I was busy with a different project that had a deadline of yesterday and (b) I was unsure if self-promotion on this (or any other) forum would help or hurt its chances of being read and voted positively or negatively. I see many other people have linked to their own stories, so I presume that doesn't hurt anything. This was a one-off story to fit the rules of the contest, but I have a couple of ideas and some notes scribbled down for some series that I'm encouraged to work on since at least the people who voted on my first story seemed to like it.

Thanks again to all who answered my earlier question, and good luck to everyone who entered!

The trend in number of Summer Lovin' stories is similar to @Actingup's graph for the Winter Holidays contest;

I started here in 2016. People who've been here longer than I tell me that for a while before 2016 there was a cadre of AHers who conspired to rig the contests, which might explain the decline in participation after 2012. Since 2016, the growth has been monotonic, but for the little bump for the pandemic year.

It's now up to 142 stories. So I guess this is a record breaking summer of love.

I take "Pending" to mean "Pending publication." It covers the review period and the delay prior to publication. For contests and some events, the delay can include a holding time prior to the contest's or event's "go live" date.
