How many people actually use a phone to write?

It really really is.

I'm a gamer, too, sooo... My keyboard takes some abuse from that in addition to typing for writing and shit.

If I couldn't touch type, I'd definitely have taken some white paint and repainted my keys so I'd know what is what, lol.

I also I'm have a cat, so the last time I cleaned my keyboard, I ended up pulling about a cat's worth of fur out of my laptop and keyboard. That's always fun because she's immediately offended and lays down on it, then rolls around to get her fur under the keys again.

Especially on a laptop where the keyboard is even harder to replace. I remember a friend wanting to borrow my old laptop before it died and just staring at the mostly blank keys in confused terror before telling me nevermind.

Yeah, cat's shed a lot, every time I take the toothbrush (that is just for my keyboard) to the keys I'm knocking so many cat hairs loose, and he doesn't even lay on my keys.

Betcha haven't keyed text on a Linotype machine. Or a Teletype 33. Both require a certain rhythm for any proficiency, and the Linotype is definitely not QWERTY.

That is true. My girl just had her checkup and the vet is impressed with our oral care routine of "hard plastic, human hands and feet, and random cardboard bits."

Sometimes I suspect she has a stash of plastic she's pulled from the trash hidden somewhere because I swear to god, we can not open anything with plastic overwrap for a week and we'll still hear the "crackle, crinkle, monch" of plastic and find her chewing something we swore we'd thrown out weeks ago.

Do you have an external full-size mechanical keyboard which attaches to your phone?

There's swipe typing, which I don't know how to enable, much less do. I'm barely aware of its existence. And there's hen pecking touch typing. Which is where you stare at the tiny little keyboard on the phone and pick out the buttons individually. It's a bit of a pain, even with predictive text enabled, but at least I know how to do it.

I have just about got to the point where I can touch type on my phone, i.e. type away without looking at the keys.

This post needed looking at the i.e. and a few goes on the word without and the word word but otherwise was done just looking at the screen.

I've noticed people saying that they write their stories on their phone. This is wild to me. I suck at using a smart phone to write but have a pretty good word count on a keyboard and I certainly can't live without a spell check on a word processor. Maybe it's a generational thing. I grew up in the 90's when we had computer labs and typing classes.

I'm also curious how many people use word vs an online word processor like google docs.

I am somewhat the same way. I can start a thought or memory on my phone, but my thumbs type too many mistakes. So, I always finish on my pc. I like having a full size keyboard. Side story, from working my previous job, I had to use a laptop on the go and got used to the smaller keyboard. When I finally could get back to a full size (like the typing classes in high school), it took me a while to get used to a full sized keyboard again. And now I’ve found it so much easier to type out the story!

As for Word or online processor… I do mostly use Word, but do have an online MS account. I prefer Word on the desktop, but can use it online or my phone. As for Google Docs, I’ve tried, but just never worked as well for me.

I write snippets on the phone, then email them to myself and paste them into the word document I'm using. That's the definitive document. I usually erase my note after I've done that.

That's how I do it. I have text-to-speech enabled on my phone (I live in a hands-free jurisdiction, so I use Android Auto's "note to self" a lot) but that's never for more than a few lines at a time. Boo to Google recently deciding to move where the notes went though. :-(

I'd recommend at least typing into a document first. You'd have a backup copy in case something went wrong with your submission, and if you want to edit it later, you don't need to retype again.

I am not very good With computers. Just easier for me to directly type into the text box. My backup copy is on paper and I have dozens of journals in my cedar chest

There is no doubt a computer is easier. However my phone is on me all the time and I can use it to note an idea and then refine quickly.

Still didn't state whether it was using a phone or another device, but I imagine that spell and grammar checking in the text box sounds like more of a computery job than a phoney job. But idk, phones are pretty capable anymore.
Anyway I still don't know whether to you "typing" looks like or like but it's OK
