The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

I have spent more of this week reading than writing, which is a big change for me. But I have really enjoyed reading so many people's story and I think my writing was ready for it too. BTW, If you haven't looked at it, Emily's wonderful thread asking us to post our best work produced a really wonderful reading list that I am about a third of the way through. Everyone one of them so far has been delightful. And made me think about what I do as a writer. Next up on the list is @THBGato piece. I have been meaning to read some of his for months, so I am looking forward to it. I also snuck in @NuclearFairy delightful Mermaid fiction.

Time to go work on getting my accountant and my photographer to fall in love while I wait for anyone else to show up today. I have the kettle on, but I cannot bake like CK and last time I made coffee somewhere, all the coffee drinkers yelled at me. I don't know how much to put in. I don't drink it.

Another hot and sunny day ahead. Luckily, one of the pop-ups did rain on me so the lawn certainly appreciated it.

I've got the coffee pot going. The teapot is already hot thanks to @iwatchus. There are donuts on the counter along with the last of the peach cobbler. The peach crop has finished for the year so next up will be apple crisp.

I'll be over in the corner working on my story. Now I just have to figure out how a sommelier becomes certified ...

It's 8:15...and I am sitting at my computer, in the dark (my wife is still in bed behind me) but the work has begun. Kids are at school. Chapter 9 will not write itself.

Also, Last night I came to a conclusion. Chapter 10, will be the last chapter of book one. WHEN I officially publish (as in, physically publish) I will be breaking these chapters down to smaller chapters, because honestly, 10-11k chapters is a bit long.

What would have been book one, will now become Books 1, 2, and 3. They will be Shana's origin story. And then I will do at least a 3-book series for the main part of the story that this is all leading to.

Today is supposed to be warmish with a chance of showers. Temperatures in the foreseeable future are near normal with a chance of showers every day. The showers have skipped my neighborhood for a month now. It would be nice if some of them showered here.

I started cutting the cucumber vines. I think I cut everything that wasn't on or under the trellises. I'll probably wait for tomorrow to cut the rest. All the cucumbers I need for the year are either pickled in the cabinet or fermenting in two 1-gallon jars. I need no more, but what I have in the fridge is enough to double what I have in the cabinet and jars.

I brought in more cucumber, two kinds of tomatoes and the first green pepper. The New Mexico chiles are getting close.

The third chapter in my series is mostly wrapped up, I believe, so I'm starting the 4th.

I've been putting this brainstorming session off for three months, but now I can't any longer. I have to figure out all the different events in an Intercollegiate Blowjob League match, as well as the sponsors and ads that the color commentators will read in between. It's the National Championship, and my narrator has accepted the "Call to Adventure."

I can't believe I typed any of those sentences.

it's almost time to go pick the kids up (like, I should leave the house anytime from 10 minutes ago, to 10 minutes from now.) so I think I am probably done writing for the day...

But, thats ok...cause damn I did good today..

Start of the day word count: 2562
End of the day word count: 7930

for a total of: 5368! leaving me about 3k shy of the end of chapter 9. (and I think I'm going to wait til I finish chapter 10 before I submit, so that 8, 9, and 10 can go up together...)

Doctor called, apparently I'm borderline anemic again. If I spend more'n a month not being borderline anemic, something's weird. 🙃 Other than that I'm good.

One of the sponsors should sell mouth wash.

I have unleashed my Off-Campus installment upon the world, and it's going to trickle out, one day at a time. This is the story I've been sitting on for two years. It is in the process of reminding me how confusing and incomplete the "beta" Series management system is. Things still aren't working as they're supposed to. That's okay, I'll whip it into submission sooner or later. A #2 flogger should be about right at this point.

Crummy but expected med news on this front: I have officially crossed into Type 2. Appointment with the doc next week so she can nag me about diet and exercise. I know that I was doing some bad things between the two recent tests, so I'll plead my case about reducing the excesses and we can see where we stand X months from now. My biggest concerns are rice, which is the base of a lot of dishes I like (high glycemic index, so spikes the glucose), and my twice-a-week frozen margarita. Fingers crossed.

Welcome, @BeautyInTheStruggle! Pull up a chair and stay a while.

I cannot refrain from asking the obvious question, though. Inquiring minds and all that... You say you like your coffee like you like your men. Given that cantankerous caffeine machine on the counter, would that be pale and whipped to a froth? . 😈

The answer to the coffee was : in me !

Actually that was in a dirty pick up lines video going around Facebook and I just loved it, so I figured out of all the place sI visit this place would most appreciate it.

I did not mean to post and disappear, it took me forever to decide on a username, even longer to find a picture to put on this profile because I figured I probably didn't want it to relate back to "normal me". Anyway I'm sick, so is half the family there's a constant buzz or cicada like sound in my ears making it hard to concentrate on things including my writing at the moment.

Ever hear the term "moral abduction?" or "morally abducted?"

I got a friend request on Bluesky this afternoon, and the person responded immediately when I checked their history and friended them back. After talking for a while I started wondering if I was talking to a bot. It seemed scripted at first. Once we got past the initial script they used some rather awkward terms. "Discussant" was an example, and it came in the same sentence with "promotion maven." Who ever says that?

On the other hand, they reeled off a really bad run-on sentence, which almost made me think they were human, but there were no typos.

Then they wondered if I'd met "strange" people offering links to porn, trying to sell greeting cards, or saying they're refugees and asking for money. The "morally abducted" term came up in reference to the refugees asking for money.

For what it's worth, I allow adult content, and people just post the porn. They don't offer links.

I Googled the phrase, and Google's AI described it as a concept from Chinese culture and used mostly in China. It means being shamed into doing something (donating money, especially) on moral grounds that you don't necessarily care about.

They asked if we could be friends and I responded without saying yes. The conversation stopped at that point.

Not sure what they were after. I'll guess they wanted me to repost for them.

Interesting, but you should scan your computer for viruses and worms right this moment.

A company in Louisiana supposedly has "created" a low-glycemic index rice. Google PARISH White Rice.

Thanks! There is another outfit offering the same special strain, but I didn't realize it until checking their website:

https://www.cahokiarice.com

They're local to us, I've corresponded with the farmer, and have been eating their rice for about three years. So we're already there. Really good to know. Again, thanks for the tip!

I don't recall who said this, but I especially liked this follow-on to 'I like my men the way I like my coffee:' 'Falling off the roof of the car as I drive away.'

Luckily I did not have a mouth full of coffee right now or I might have had to wipe it off my screen when I read that! Sadly my cup is empty.

There's definitely a story in those words though!

And it reminds me of the time I did put a coffee on my bull-bar and drove away, 30 kms later, including some dirt roads I arrived at my destination, the cup was still there and the coffee still warm - win!

Deliberately backing away now before I do think of a story with that kind of inspiration...
