What do Women Want....to roleplay?

After having spent time only on Literotica, I know there is no shortage of male and female writers who are very creative in exploring erotica. Still, at least to me, the roleplay section has suffered a bit of a downturn. It always seemed busier in the past, with regular output of erotic roleplays and plenty of willing partners to write with. You review profiles and find people who haven't been active for years. I don't know what is responsible for this change, and it came simply because of nostalgia, but I can say that there seems to be more men looking for writing partners than women. So, rather than post a bunch of ideas and hope I get some interest, I wanted to post a question, promote healthy discussion, and hopefully help people make connections.

So, what do women look for in a roleplay, and what do they want to roleplay? A simple question with a complex answer.
 
Hm. I think that answer is going to depend on the women actually. Many of us seek different things, as men do. I also think that as the weather warms up and more people can start getting outdoors to do things, writing takes a backseat. At least, that's how I see it.

A good story. In the background, writing partners need to communicate with each other and not be afraid to do so. If one person feels like the other has stepped on their toes, do not feel afraid to say so. It happens from time to time while creating together for the most part. As a writer, I try to think of the reading audience. What would bring them pleasure as well as my own and my partner's.

Now, as to personal pleasure? I enjoy a little bit of everything. I do have certain kinks I like to cater to and I find other writers who enjoy those same kinks. I also like reaching outside of my personal box and doing something maybe a bit darker or at least different. I also like to test my comfort zone. Some people do; some don't.
 
I think the weather is a factor, and I certainly believe you have better writing the more fulfilling and busy your life is, away from screen time. Read, explore, exercise, enjoy work and play with friends and family. It fuels good writing, to be sure.

Also, you get to the heart of things, and that's why I posted this thread. To start a dialogue between people and share. In any relationship, I think communication is key, and the more you can share, the more erotic fun you can enjoy.

Couldn't agree with you more this isn't a porn film where bumping into each other in the lobby is enough of a context for sex. A good story with different elements swirling around it. This is erotic literature, and we should create good stories.
 
Ahhhhhh, a nice well laid out storyline with in depth character details to be read by all parties prior to the actual role play, for everyone to get into character? Guess people are going to have to dig deep and hone those writing skills. My main question is how to take the written form that creates the setting and begin the role playing? I am not a writer or actor so I have a great deal to learn it seems. How does a lady see it unfolding?
 
Some of the joy of writing here at Lit with someone is the lovely back-and-forth you have with someone during the creative process. Now, sometimes you find your ideas don't mesh, and that happens; we all have different tastes, and I'd rather that happen than start and stop. That's another thing I've learned. Establish characters, establish boundaries, and don't write someone else's characters' reactions (unless discussed or desired), but it's also important not to plan every detail. Let things develop organically. Let there still be surprises for everyone just within the realm of desire.

  3. I saw an adult film parody of the long-time Scooby-Doo franchise a while back, and I couldn't stop laughing. The franchise has been around with all kinds of characters for a long time, so there is plenty of material to draw from, and we can pick and choose what we want. My idea is that the characters have been through a lot, with the adventures being past canon, and the older characters are now separated, living lives, still working on crimes and mysteries in the private sector. I think it would be funny and erotic for characters to hook up again, perhaps for romance or just for fun, and there is a large supporting cast. The story centers around a rogue cop in a fictional version of Miami during the cocaine wars of the 1980s. It has plenty of action, drama, 1980s tropes, and film references. This street warrior survives and thrives because he gets results and has connections for protection. The plot introduces an outsider, possibly a federal agent, who goes undercover to uncover his secrets and build a case against him. She was chosen for the mission because she fits his type and has a similar past, but she is focused on her mission. However, things become complicated as she gets to know him and perhaps even begins to care about him. Corporate settings aren't rare, but rarely well done. As a corporate myself I find most erotica in office settings unrealistic--hear me out--because real professionals have a lot of reservations about doing the dirty with a colleague, client, supplier, intern, boss or whathaveyou. When these things spiral from a spur-of-the-moment impulse, it feels too risky and too cheap.

There's definitely a market for erotica that jumps right in after minimal setup, but the one setting where this throws me off is at the workplace.

If we skip past the internal conflict, that slow burn of being slowly drawn in towards someone but reason against it because "professionalism", the tension and conflict that fills the room whenever they cross paths and is aching be resolved... well, it's a missed opportunity.

I would be interested in a story about a female exec at a large consulting firm with a "boy's club culture", slowly drawn towards a client or colleague who, like all the rest of them challenges her professionally but draws the line at disrespecting or belittling her. He learns to admire her talent, drive, and... other qualities he tries but fails not to pay too much attention to, but she is wary of his intentions. A back and forth ensues, thick with banter and spontaneous acts of allyship.

In my mind there are further competitive dynamics to explore but it depends on how far the partner can take the detail. This would probably work better when my counterpart, like myself, has considerable real life corporate experience to draw from.

Yes it is about finding that balance because we're not writing porn, but erotic tales. In a real office setting, you're worried about seeing the person the next day or what your reputation might be after a wild weekend at a corporate retreat. A threesome might be a lot of fun, but what happens when you're all back at the office? I remember talking to a female coworker on a construction site (I play and work in many different settings) about OnlyFans. Doing some sexy videos is excellent if you decide to continue as a sex worker, but it's hard to step back into construction and be taken seriously or avoid harassment. I personally wouldn't care if I saw a woman at a strip club working it on a Saturday and she showed up for a shift during the week on a loading dock.

The kind of story you're proposing makes great sense because of the slow burn. You're getting to know someone, liking them, and finding a connection. Sometimes intimacy comes quickly, but there is something to be said for getting to know each other. You can have a fantastic, intense night of passion, but it matters that they also know how you like your coffee.
 
I think one of the reason their is a fall off in RP is linked to the fact as a society we have lost our connection to story telling. It seems we do not make the time to read let alone write enough to keep the art alive and well. Even porn used to have stories, plots and effort put into its writing, but now with people just being okay with clips and highlights it seems the art of the build up and the pay off is waning.
 
I agree with all of that statement. So few people read these days, as evidenced by the decline of bookstores. Although I am aware that downloading books is a common practice, it seems that reading for pleasure isn't something pursued by many. I also agree with you that there is even a lack of effort with SMUT as far as stories or trying to be a good film that happens to have graphic sex. On a related note, with tabletop games, people often want epic stories for their characters, but then encounter issues with playing the game, where things can go wrong and characters can die. Well, it's a creative experience, but it's also about addressing issues and devising practical solutions. You might build an epic story, but you haven't written it yet.

I want to roleplay with some women who enjoy the journey and creating the story.
 
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The most important thing when it comes to writing a thread, is communication. You HAVE to communicate with your partner so that both of you know what the other is looking for in a story, both in the story itself, the schedule for when posts happen, and the ratio of sex to story. All of these things are essential if both people are going to enjoy the story and want to continue writing it. From there, it honestly doesn't matter if they are writing pages per post or one-liners. As long as both people know what they want, and are getting what they want from their partner, then everything can move forward as planned.

Another thing that I, personally, enjoy, even though I'm not a woman, is a highly collaborative experience behind the scenes. I like to brainstorm with my partner about the future of our characters and the thread as a whole, beyond the initial details that we have in our heads. That's not to say that every tiny detail is planned out. There is still plenty of room for curve balls. I just like to collaborate to make sure that it is a very smooth read for both us the writers, and the readers.
 
Can't argue with any of that. Brainstorming is important and communication are essential to get to a point where you can launch an idea and keep it going. I've made some wonderful connections over the years here and missed some. So hope to make some more.
 
Hadn't seen this thread til now.
Personally I've taken long hiatuses to have children and come back every few years. Now I'm done having kids, it makes it easier to return to writing.
I enjoy reluctance/non con that becomes a relationship between characters, it's a particular favourite theme of mine. And I've managed to do a lot with that theme in various plots.
Generally speaking, I prefer to write in accordance with my own kinks but developing a story is extremely important, I love a good setting and backstory which gives life to the characters.

Saying that, I've been swayed to a vanilla thread a time or two by a good story or a prolific co writer - either because I have desperately wanted to try my hand at writing with them or because they pitched me a challenge or a really good plot. Some of my best threads have had little behind the scenes work other than to touch base on a fact or two because I enjoy curve balls - giving and receiving.
I mean half the fun of roleplay is not knowing what comes next.

Even when the boards were thick with writers, finding someone compatible to write with was half the challenge. They have to meet you on a literary level and on an interest level. A good co writer on the boards is as unique as a lover in life. Turns average into a gold star.

I think the answer is probably pretty variable since women, like men, are variable. I mean, I'm a woman, but also I'm rather atypical because I'm asexual and have never really partaken in things that are traditionally considered feminine (such as clothes shopping - I'm still wearing clothes I've had for years already and wearing make-up and things like that).

For me, whether I'm RPing smut or something else, I prefer good spelling and grammar. I will try to overlook mistakes and give the benefit of the doubt if someone seems friendly enough, but if it persists, it's not uncommon for me to lose interest. It just tends to take me out of the story.

Speaking of story, I love story! But also, sometimes, I just want to write straight-up smut as soon as possible. Though, there has to be something there to keep my interest. Creativity, interesting characters, an interesting scenario, highly detailed descriptions, a willingness to actually help move things forward, and communication (which goes hand in hand with feedback). I don't necessarily need all of these, but I like a few, at least.

I do not actually know what the experience of sex is actually like (and I prefer to keep it that way - I think I've gathered enough data from reading and article research), but I strongly suspect that it is very frustrating when one partner has to do all the work and the other partner just lays there expecting things to happen with very little input. It is the same when it comes to roleplaying anything (smut or otherwise). I think this is especially egregious with some guys who write RP - especially if they're looking for something like femdom. I don't mind writing femdom on occasion, but it's hard to get into if the guy character is basically "I'm not going to make a move to do anything or give much encouragement; I just want to see what happens."

I also don't like it when I'm clearly looking for a more dominant-type of character, and the character in question seems to be encouraging a femdom situation. Like no, that's not what I was expecting out of this. Sometimes, I'll try to work with it, but other times, I just give up. That's usually when I ghost because unfortunately some people get very pushy for replies (another thing that zaps my energy for RP - I don't think this is limited to men, but I've seen men do it often enough - and it can get way too entitled and demanding).

I also don't like it when people godmod (take control of my character and write their actions and feelings and reactions down for me) or metagame (where your character knows out-of-character information in-characterly - such as reading a character's mind without mind reading powers and knowing that they're thinking about sex even though there isn't any outward sign in the RP that this is what they're thinking about).

Also, if I have something listed as a limit or I express discomfort in something, I prefer that to be respected and not pushed against.

I think some of that is fairly standard.

Now, then, I can't quite remember but I thought I saw your ad in the other thread about scenarios you were looking to RP. In this thread what you've written sounds more general, but in the other thread it sounds more specific. I think some people if they're not familiar with a fandom like Grand Theft Auto, The Karate Kid, or what was it? The Last Stand? They're going to turn it down because they're not sure how to write for those specific fandoms.

This probably doesn't apply to everyone, but while I think zombie survival stories can be interesting to RP in a general, non-smutty sense - the setting (people dying and coming back to life as brain-eating monsters, shambling corpses, worried about infection, struggling with food and water) doesn't exactly scream "oh yeah, that's sexy" to me. Again, lots of story potential. An interesting idea. But not really sexy material - again, at least, to me. Other women might think differently. I do not know. I am only myself - not other women.

I think perhaps the most interesting idea you've posted is the erotic Alice in Wonderland idea - though, I think introducing other storybook worlds into the mix would just complicate things and encourage far more story than smut. I think exploring a strange, unique erotic world with Alice in Wonderland vibes (not actually Alice in Wonderland) would be neat. Though, sometimes, I think people are just looking for a 1 character with 1 other character, maybe a shipping kind of situation, rather than a world-exploring situation. Still. A very cool idea!

Sometimes, some people are just looking for specific things. Kind of have that going on myself right now; though I'm thinking of branching out into a few other things since I've got bit with a couple of ideas.

FLK,

Anything can be roleplayed, keeping in mind the rules set forth by our moderators. It just takes some communication between the co-writers. You adjust as you have to because of the rules but other than that, I don't see where something can not be roleplayed.
