After several months looking, my wife and I have (hopefully) found a real potential addition.
We're meeting him tomorrow at a bar in the city near where we live. Nice, casual setting. We've already agreed that, if anyone isn't happy, we'll just have a drink and call it a day.

I've always been the 3rd person in 3some fun with couples.

From my experience and in talking with the couples, 4 of the 6 couples I played with always used the first meeting as a no pressure, casual time to get to know the new playmate. So, don't just dive into something without all being on the same page. That way, there are no regrets no matter how it all turns out.
