AI images for cover art?

So wait, has the AI ban on images for series covers been lifted? I have the second chapter of a new series going up in a couple of days and went to check the current rules on pictures. Granted, I haven't checked the FAQ in a while. The last time I checked they were a no go. The FAQ now says this:

"If you’re considering using an AI to generate cover art (or any other visual art), please be aware of any potential copyright and/or ethical considerations regarding AI visual artwork. For further reading on innovations in, and criticisms of, AI visual artwork generation, please read the Artificial Intelligence Art Wikipedia article."

Both of my series published here have covers that include images generated through the use of AI, but the covers were added a couple of years ago, before most of the concerns over AI were being discussed.

Last year the FAQ on series covers used to read:

To avoid having cover art rejected, authors may want to look into AI Artwork Generators for potential ways to generate unique copyright-free Series Cover Art. Please be sure to read the terms of service of any generator you use to be sure who owns the rights. For further reading on the innovations in, and criticisms of, AI artwork generation, please read the Artificial Intelligence Art Wikipedia article.

Then they changed it to the current wording... I think in October last year?

I don't recall the FAQs on series cover art specifically banning AI explicitly, but of course there's other areas where it has been banned.

Disclaimer, I'm not saying you can use AI for covers, Just that on the time I've checked the FAQ on series art it didn't explicitly ban it outright. I haven't looked into the copyright stuff that deeply, so can't say whether this is effectively a ban or not.

Well I've give it a shot and report back. Chapter 2 of my new series goes up tomorrow. I unfortunately don't have any artistic talents of my own and I'm not going to pay an artist for a smut story I'm releasing for free.

To clarify,

You must own the copyright or a copyright license to the work

The site doesn't check this when you upload the image, they have no way of knowing.

When you upload the image you declare that you do.

You'd need to check yourself that you own the copyright/copyright licence of the image. I don't know if AI generated images can even be copyrighted, and this is what the FAQ says you need to research prior to your declaration.
