The short answer is, the way our political system works right now, there simply isn't any way for a third-party or independent candidate to have a plausible chance at winning. That could change, but for the moment at least, it won't.

"Both sides" are not the same. On one side, the party is essentially controlled at this point by people who openly hate immigrants, transpeople, Muslims, and anyone who doesn't think like them. The other side has its extremists, but right-wing propaganda notwithstanding, they're not in charge of anything.

Also, the kind of blind faith you're describing really isn't happening on both sides either. None of the Democrats I know - myself included - think our leaders are infallible demigods like the right does with Trump.

Obama received 52 percent support in a head-to-head against Trump, who garnered 41 percent, according to a Daily Mail/J.L. Partners poll of 1,013 registered voters conducted July 9 to July 10. The lead fell well outside of the plus or minus 3.1 percentage point margin of error.
