Trump plans to send US homeless to treatment centers

I think the ACLU will sue to invalidate the EO. They were the initial instigators of the suits which led directly to most State mental hospital patients being released to harm themselves and others. As such they cannot allow this EO to stand.

I also think the courts will agree with them and enjoin the EO.

The order is a long, boring read but skimming through it, it’s not particularly meaningful. There are municipalities that have ordinances that attempt to get people off the sidewalks, underpasses, creek banks, etc, and into treatment but the reality is that there are nowhere near enough facilities and beds to deliver inpatient treatment for everyone who ought to be in it and conservatorship laws make it extremely difficult to place people into lockdown facilities against their will.

The problem is lack of affordable housing. If you skip addressing that, you don't fix the issue.

That's all this administration does.....go for quick fixes and quick news bytes.

That’s a complete fallacy. I have to go to Seattle quite a lot and I have friends in Seattle and Portland that see this stuff everyday. The vast majority of the homeless population are drug addicts or suffering from serious mental illness. It’s sad and I wish that wasn’t the case but it is. You could literally give housing away and most of them would be back on the streets in no time because they just are not functional enough to manage their lives.

I see it every time I visit LA or the Bay Area. A substantial portion of the unsheltered suffer from mental illness and/or addiction. Estimates range from a third to more than half, depending on the specific area. Obviously it’s impossible to know precisely without thoroughly assessing every case but anyone who has spent time in areas with chronic homelessness can observe the behavior with their own eyes.

It’s also true that many if not most of these people refuse shelter and refuse treatment. There’s a really sad story from California about the youngest brother of Pat Tillman. He crashed his car into a post office that caught fire. He’s had a long history of mental illness and is homeless. He grew up in a good home and his family has tried for years to get him help. It’s not easy if the individual doesn’t want it.

Trump and his handlers are capable of anything. He could cut a deal w/ N. Korea and ship dissidents there and i would not be surprised. He hates Americans

As the law stands, as per SCOTUS, you cannot hold anyone in those treatment centers without a court order. And obtaining a court order is not a trivial process. I doubt the ACLU, or any of the other parasites on the ass of society, will even have to sue.

Virtually every city with a 'homeless' problem have treatment centers, centers that go unused because they have rules, like no drugs or alcohol. Further the cities with the worst problems actually subsidize the street urchins life style. "When you reward bad behavior you're going to get more of it."

That's a common myth, that homeless people are just a few whackos who belong in treatment centres. Are there really so many more crazy people now than there were, say, in 1950?

The problem is a lack of housing for people with low incomes. (More cities and states make homeless encampments a crime, leaving low-income people with few options.)

And even for the people who ARE addicted or mentally ill, if housing wasn't so expensive (or unobtainable), they or their families may have been able to manage things much better. Elon Musk is addicted to Ketamine, Donald Trump is a criminal, convicted on numerous felony counts but because their family resources are sufficient to keep a roof over their heads, they have better prospects.

Ugh. So stubborn. Nothing is going to change until you stop believing this nonsense and see reality. But talking to liberals is like talking to a wall.

I'm not saying there aren't addicts or mentally ill people that are homeless. I'm saying that housing is the main driver of most of the hoelless.

Why do you think people turn to drugs?

Additionally those on the liberty side of the country may want to explain forcing people into facilities

The homeless will be building shanty towns, as they did during the last Great Depression. Then they were called 'Hoovervilles', this time it will be 'Trumpvilles'. Or maybe 'MAGAvilles'.

The National Mall will quickly fill up, but there should be plenty of room on the golf courses of Bedminster.

Trump's order addresses civil (voluntary) commitment, not criminal. However, once someone voluntarily commits themselves, getting out isn't easy because a doctor has to sign off on it.

As for involuntary commitment, all that's needed is someone being charged with a crime and arrested. At that point the law recognizes that mentally ill defendants cannot meaningfully defend themselves (even with legal counsel) so they are ordered into mental confinement until such time as they are fit to represent themselves.

This isn't the get out of jail free card, their criminal cases are held pending their release from the asylum. If they're released as mentally fit and able to care for themselves, they are then picked up and tried for the original offense (and no statute of limitations applies).

Potentially, a plea of mental incompetency is a life sentence in a mental health facility. As Charles Manson discovered.

Personally, I think the answer is to get rid of the current framework and go back to the one that worked; incarceration.

We don't have to put them in jails, mental institutions should be where they're held. They get shelter, food, and medical care and they're supervised and assessed so that those who begin to be able to care for themselves can be released back into the wild.

Note, this isn't for vagrants unless those vagrants are mentally ill or a danger to themselves or others. It's for those who need the help but don't understand how to get it, or who refuse it when offered because they're paranoid about the system. And it works in conjunction with traditional shelter programs.
