Online Safety Act (UK)

Does Proton allow split tunnelling? Or will I have to repeatedly switch it on and off and keep logging into lit every time I want to make a payment on G pay?
Adding to this, this is a windows and andorid only feature for now, they do plan on adding Mac and IOS support for split tunneling this year iirc

With some reluctance I signed up to the free version of Proton this afternoon. I didn't fancy the idea of waking up on Friday morning and finding I was going to use private information to get age verification for half the sites I use.

Why reluctance?

In an ideal world parents would take an active interest in their offspring's online activity and make use of existing parental controls/software to ensure their safety. I think the Online Safety Act was passed with the best of intentions and, as such was unopposed by any of the main parties. However I have a feeling that the law of unintended consequences may well make itself known once its provisions go live.

And what do you do about someone connecting to an unsecured WiFi connection?

Or kids whose parents don't care?

Seems the best overview I have seen. Can't see it really clears things up for me, but that's because I'm an idiot.

Really the ball is in Lit's court. It would seem, to me, that the UK government aren't going to start taking proactive stuff unless it comes up on their radar. But that depends how well known Lit is. I doubt there's some clerk in the civil service with a huge list of every website whose content applies who is then checking that content regularly to make sure everything is ok and that the site passes muster. I mean Lit could just say it's done all that is required, and nobody may check until someone's reported. Even if Lit does nothing, all that might (initially) happen is a warning letter. Or they could face litigation/fines right away. Who knows.

So I guess it comes down to a cost benefit analysis that Lit will have to do. I think it unlikely they will just switch off tomorrow, but it is from tomorrow that the enforcement regime begins.
Anything is possible I guess.

Once EU, USA and other countries adopt similar, then no, a simple VPN is unlikely to suffice
Why?

I mean, if the tech exists to block VPN's, which I assume is what you're referring to, why not use it already? I mean these bills are driven more by ideology than practicality

Block? Idk

But China has certainly made their use illegal iirc.

But the more countries and territories put similar policies in place (and they undoubtedly will) then the fewer places there will be to make the IP appear that it's from.

And eventually, laws will be put in place that companies who want to do business here, or in US or EU or wherever will either have to age verify everyone, regardless of their country or just block IPs from non-complient countries

According to the act (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1k81lj8nvpo) talking about or promoting the use of VPN's is illegal so if nothing else, this convo could get Lit into trouble!

has the Chinese model actually stopped VPN's? If so how, through coercion and threats of fines or through tech rendering them useless?

Interesting that Discord will also be introducing age verification...

And Twitter

Its near negligible, I know plenty of people living in Shanghai, China, that regularly use VPN , it just exists in the law, a practical nobody using it, and authorities giving a fuck, the chance are close to 0, not zero, but close

Further discussion on Chinese laws is a very philosophical matter lol, the way Chinese law is written every person in that nation is breaking a law at any given moment 100%
Just don't fuck with the drug and immigration laws and don't brag to English speaking authorities and the CCP will gladly ignore u lol

this whole thing is an unholy mess. Even if a site blocks the UK, is it still going to be enough to satisfy the UK? Presumaby, as this affects international sites, the UK gov will want evidence. Is geoblocking easy to prove or will they take it on trust?

I don't think there will be an issue tomorrow, but we don't know. It's already in the media who are reporting this coming into effect from friday.

Load of bollocks really. It will also affect image sharing sites, so if you want to share naughty pics on Lit you'll also hve to, eventually, verify on those sites as well! We'll end up with permanent VPN's in service. Boom trade for them I guess
