Can I reply to comments on my stories?

So, I get comments on my stories. Not a lot, but sometimes there will be a question. Like "when's the next part coming?" There is no reply button in the comments. Some of the users comment anonymously. Is there a way to respond to them? If I post a comment of my own, do people who commented on that story get notified?

I post comments as a response occasionally. I have sent direct feedback to those with names as well. But Mr Anyonymous remains hidden. I have a few who I know are are the same guy because of what he says. He's read my series avidly. Why he doesn't go ahead and make up a username, I have no idea.

I would love a way to reply directly to comments and have them be nested underneath the original one. I don't reply to each individual comment because I think it looks tacky and artificially inflates your comment count, but there are plenty of other authors who do that, so it's certainly an option. I personally wait until there have been enough comments to add one of my own that addresses them all at once. Anonymous commenters can see that if they ever check the story again, but as alohadave said, there's no way of notifying them.

If a commenter has a Lit account, I have reached out before via the Feedback portal to avoid cluttering up the comments with my responses.

If they are a registered member, I often send a PM thank you and response, but as others have said, Anon generally gets left out unless they say something something really insightful or really ridiculous as to draw a direct reply in the comments. Even then, they probably won’t see it, but others who read their insight or their inanity may.

Like Nynah, I don’t like replying to each individual comment within the comments section itself because the original commenter likely won’t see the response anyway and it artificially inflates the comment count and may turn some readers (like me) off.

I often send private messages to named commentators, thanking them, and including the text of my public reply if I've replied publicly. I try and be a little restrained with the number of times I comment on my own stories, although not always successfully. If there's something really objectionable in what a commentator has said quite often other readers will jump in, but I think that it can sometime be helpful if the author acknowledges fair criticism or explains their intent.

I really wish we could directly reply to comments. Once in a while I get a nice comment from someone(most of the time anonymously) and I wanna say Yo thanks. But the simplicity of this site is part of it's charm. Also I could see that feature backfiring cause there would be random stories with a thousand comments from two people arguing.

But "where is part II?" is not a question I'd bother replying to.
Oddly, that's one of the few comments I reply to, as in some cases it's not clear which story picks up the thread (even though I have a suggested reading order in my author bio). One of my fav comments was when a reader did that for me on Twenty:

Re0xna: Everyone, Forty has appearances of Poppy & co which is a sort of but not really an epilogue to this story. It's mainly about a different pair of women, but has enough of Poppy and Mikayla for a satisfying conclusion to this story. Give it a read, it's very good.

Speaking of comments. I'd like them to have the same thumbs up, and other icons these comments do. I always wondered why there i not a simple thumbs down that you don't agree. and a number likt this comment got 20 thumbs ups and 120 thumbs down. You'd get a lot of feedback.
I bet readers read the comments as fast as the story.
