Trying to decide on a new book to read. Do I give another shot to an author that I’m intrigued by (mainly bc she’s my neighbor) who can write really well but so far the tropes aren’t really my thing? Or do I spend the next hour trying to find something within my normal genre and hope the writer can actually write well?

Always go for quality prose, unless it's a short book. But step outside your genre, lots to explore.
