Austin Texas firefighters publicly denounced their own Fire Chief tonight, outraged that Chief Joel Baker would not deploy the Austin FD Swift Water Rescue Unit to Kerrville Texas during the Texas flood last weekend. Supposedly Chief Baker said such a deployment "wasn't in the budget, and he was committed to saving Austin taxpayers money". Apparently Chief Baker was unaware the the state of Texas reimburses local police/fire/rescue units who are deployed to other areas in times of emergencies (I knew they did this with public utilities, but not LEO/FD).

The firefighters are demanding a public "vote of no confidence" in Chief Baker's lack of leadership.

Unfortunately, this was the Independence Day weekend, and Secretary Kristi Noehm TURNED HER GOVERNMENT PHONE OFF BECAUSE IT WAS A HOLIDAY. CNN reported that “even as Texas rescue crews raced to save lives, FEMA officials realized they needed Noem’s approval before sending [in] additional assets. Noem didn’t authorize FEMA’s deployment of Urban Search and Rescue teams until Monday, more than 72 hours after the flooding began, multiple sources told CNN.”
