The AH Coffee Shop and Reading Room 09

Whenever I hear someone start to get antiquarian nostalgia and express romantic urges about living in medieval times, 'the Age of Chivalry' and all that, I just smile and say two words:

Dental care.

"Modern medicine", in general. By "modern" I mean discoveries and techniques within my lifetime. Without them I would not be here to type this.

However, we have no cures for the heartache I feel about the Guadalupe River tragedies. Nor should we. So, so many innocent young lives lost. I hope beyond hope that they do not rebuild in that area. That summer camp may have weathered over 100 years of gully-washers, but things are different now, and repeats of conditions which sparked the inundation are likely from here on.

Tetanus. And all sorts of other diseases. Childbirth was a huge killer too.

The Extra Strength Tyenol and Ibuprofen works really well.
My wife was told by a doctor at work that the combined effect of tylenol and ibuprofen is as effective as codeine. I mentioned that to my dentist and he prescribed it for a big procedure a few years ago. I've used it since when things hurt a lot, which isn't very often.

I've wondered since if that's really true, but if you believe it's true, then it works.

...ibuprofen...

It pains me (ha!) that this and similar NSAIDs are off the table when you're on blood thinners like Plavix or Brillinta (or Warfarin, etc.). My go-to is limited to acetaminophen a la carte and sleeping it off. Lots of sleeping these days.

Hat-tip to our Brits on here, breakfast was bangers and... uh... rice. The sausage was leftover from the fine dining outing on Thursday. C ordered their bangers and mash, I had fish and chips. This was definitely not a British-themed establishment, they just happened to have both on their menu.

That dark story I've been working on is done, having more or less resolved the timeline issue. I'm still hesitating putting it up. It is very dark and very depressing, so much so that I have to walk away and do something else after each proofreading and editing session. My mind had to "go there", I guess, but living with it is another matter.

The Aztec's believed that women who died in childbirth went to the same afterlife as warriors who died in battle.

Research kicks can teach you the weirdest things.
So in which afterlife did the innocent people they slaughtered by the hundred end up?

Depends on the type of sacrifice. If it was a ritualized battle, then they became hummingbirds and followed the sun with the other warriors and the women who died in childbirth. If it was a drowning sacrifice then they went to Tlalocan, a paradise for those that died by drowning, lightning, or disease associated with rain. While everyone else went to one of the nine levels of Mictlan.

It's not wrong. Alternating paracetamol (acetaminophen in Yank-land) and ibuprofen is recommended when one or the other isn't sufficient, every 2 hours.

It's about as good as OTC levels of codeine (8mg per 500mg paracetamol), though nothing can beat prescription levels of codeine (60mg, 4x a day). If you can tolerate opiates, that is, which I can. Most people complain about constipation, which has never been an issue for me, whereas any drug like amitriptyline or pregabalin or anaesthetic which can cause nausea, I tend to have a bad reaction to.

Now I know what you're thinking when you see me staring so intently at this ear of corn. But no I don't think it'd make a good dildo, that'd just be silly. I'm wondering if I should strip it and dry it and wipe my butt with it, or if I should cut it, dry it and make a pipe out of it. And really that depends, how thick is it. That's what I'm trying to decide with this here cob.

Yup, and overlapping Ibuprofen/Advil and Tylenol (acetaminophen) works really well and you don't overload your system with one or the other - I don't often do it - but with this one there was enough pain to do it and it works really well. I could have got a prescription for something stronger by why bother when both are off the shelf and work just as well - I'm not a big believer in toughing pain out - when it's that painful there's no point/

Yes, it does work. You can use it for fever too, when it's a bad one and one or the other doesn't keep it down for the time-frame they specify before you take another one. Just alternate, but take the alternate earlier so you stick to the recommended dosage for each and overlap.

Maybe not literally "forever" since chronic use of acetaminophen causes liver damage. The nsaid's may too.

We have a calm, sunny morning, heading for a warm day. It's like summer or somethin'. I need to mow this morning. The garden looks good. Prep for the meeting on Wednesday looks good (so far).

I read through the first three chapters of my WIP yesterday. Aside from general editing, I wanted to add a little text to give readers a better idea of what was on the mind of the POV character. I often depend on a question and a gesture to communicate what's on his mind, and that's a weakness. I saved the last chapter for today because I need to put a little more flesh on the events and a little more content in the dialog.

I too find the combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen to kill pain and keep it away. However, the pain I feel for those beautiful little girls killed In the flood is beyond the ability of any drug.

I've got a pot of coffee brewing and the teapot is whistling. There are donuts and cookies on the counter for anyone needing a snack.

I will be over in the corner working away at my new story. Thanks to @Rustyoznail for the nice comment on my story.

I have been following it on the New York Times website, with their frequent updates. It's hard to read the many personal accounts without shedding a tear.

One of the reporters on Fox News had been to that camp and lived in that area, her recollections are heartbreaking

I read that another creek nearby rose 30' in an hour. That's extraordinary. An unbelievably sad situation.

You're welcome. It deserves more attention than what it has.

All I can add is my LS Pink Orchid story only has 6500 views after 18 months.

It's foggy this morning and it's already 80 degrees and muggy. The landscapers took out the overgrown flower beds and spread out the grass seed and straw. Luckily, we didn't get the predicted torrential downfalls that hit other places so I still have a seeded area.

There's a pot of coffee going and the teapot is hot. Help yourself to the fudge on the counter. I went to a Buc-ees yesterday on a lark just to see what all the fuss was about. They had some nice fudge so I had to get a sampler.

I'll be over in the corner working on my story. I'm still heart sick over the tragedy in Texas. Those ten missing girls and their counselor are surely dead but the parents can't grieve until they're found.

Thanks as always CK. Hang in there.

I have passed 70K on my first attempt at a novel/novella. Still looking like something around 100K. I have a family reunion this weekend, doubt I can finish the full draft before then. I think i will write a side story for my main series before I tackle trying to seriously wordsmith the beast.

I'm taking the long drive to Lubbock this afternoon. I'll go through Duleigh's old digs in Clovis on the way there. The agenda looks like I'll be able to leave the board meeting by early afternoon. If that's the case then I'll drive back on the longer route through Brownfield and Roswell. I spent some formative years in Roswell, but I haven't been there since 1970. I think that route also sends me through Lincoln, where Billy the Kid's gang shot him out of the Lincoln County jail. I might stop. It also crosses the lava flows between Carrizozo and Socorro--on a day when the temperatures will be soaring. I wont' stop.

Safe travels, NW. That's a lot of driving. Nothing is close to anything in that corner of the world.

Sorry, I've been busy for a week. Between family time, writing, being a mommy, having some alone time with my brother, taking care of Jo, helping Pops and Mum, and writing (for myself), I'm a busy, busy bee! How y'all doing?
