Lou Reed, Walk on the Wild Side... My Mum tells me that was heard with a shrug. I see it's dated 1972 which I think was the start of glam rock, David Bowie etc. That's great. I've never heard that before, but I'm not surprised. A lot of rock groups in that era were pushing the limits hard. And as long as the lyrics weren't too explicit (or in the case of groups like Blue Cheer, were hidden behind loud guitar distortion) the record companies let them get away with it.
Just this morning, I was thinking about Donavon's “Try for the Sun” (also 1966, in the US — earlier in the UK I think). What a brave song it was! Nothing even remotely sexy in the words— but there was no question in our minds then (and none in mine, still, now) that his relationship with “the Gypsy boy” was more than just boyhood pals. The song was about boy/boy romance— in its way, at that time, an even more forbidden topic than “just sex”.
(Ironically, the one thing that “excused” it, in the eyes of any of the Powers That Be that might have been watching closely, was their young age (“Oh, just a stage. They'll grow out of it.”) And today, their age would be the first thing that would get it banned.)
I loved that song! It took me a long time after to take it at its word, but that song felt like, for the first time, I was given permission to be who I am.Walk on the Wild Side.
Lou Reed. Such a totally interesting person involved in music. His name has surfaced not a few times as I read up on LGBTQ+ history in that 60's-70's (and beyond) time period.Lou Reed, Walk on the Wild Side... My Mum tells me that was heard with a shrug. Sigh....so true! Coming up in an a couple of hours is this town's Midnight Sun parade. Happy summer solstice to all us northern hemisphere types. So much to do, so little time for entertainment.
Photos please!! Does the sun not set up there. I don't suppose it does - how very amazing.Sigh....so true! Coming up in an a couple of hours is this town's Midnight Sun parade. Happy summer solstice to all us northern hemisphere types.
A handful of us that are "on the spectrum" will wear our regalia, hand out rainbow stuff in this parade. It kinda feels like outing myself doing a public presentation....it'll be fun tho![]()
The sun does set where I'm at...at about 2am, and rises around 4am. so no darkness now. It changes pretty fast tho, and tomorrow I think we start losing sun time.Does the sun not set up there. I don't suppose it does - how very amazing.
We went to NW Scotland years ago and it was still kinda twilight at 10.30pm which was 'mazeThe sun does set where I'm at...at about 2am, and rises around 4am. so no darkness now. It changes pretty fast tho, and tomorrow I think we start losing sun time.
Ha! maybe I'll try for a group pic!
Yes, I'd meant to mention that.
I went to watch on Apple tv but they kept pushing a monthly special offer at me so I'll wait. I hate those offers - so cynical and we don't pay for anything other the the UK tv licence, but we're talking about cancelling that ( and facing the govt inquisition who keep checking up and not believing you ). Did get nicked once in a student house... Uuum! Criminal record!!Not yet. I've been watching Clean Slate on Amazon. I see Laverne, I watchOtto has been on my "watchlist" for way to long. So much to do, so little time for entertainment.
Music festivals are so great! I hope you have lots of fun specially living your androgynous self! I def know how liberating it is to be one's honest selfWe’re going to a festival next weekend, staying in a backstage glamping tent and I’m going to be playing with some late night off-stage groups. I’m going to leave he/him at home.![]()
So do you mean sugar snap peas? I love them! almost like candy! Gardening would be fun I think. Our first lot of sugar snaps have gone over and now the pods have become a bit leathery in the heat.
If you haven't watched it yet, I highly recommend the movies, but I would highly recommend most anything from Tom Hanks.Has anyone watched A man called Otto from Netflix yet? The trailer looks good
