And then we'll finally have single-payer health care!
It is single payer but it is not national health care. Each province runs its own system with different coverages and rules. If you live in one province you can get a shingles vaccine for free but in a different province you have to pay for it. If you have a life threatening illness and a doctor you like, you can't go live in a different province and still see the same doctor. The Medicare system in the US is much better.And then we'll finally have single-payer health care!

Trump has created an $8 billion boost for the Canadian Tourist Industry
According to a report released by the Conference Board of Canada, Canada’s domestic tourism sector is about to stumble into a net economic windfall that could reach as high as $8.8 billion because to all of the money Canadians will spend traveling at home in 2025. Bloomberg News reported that the Canadian think tank's April travel intentions survey found that only 27% of respondents from Canada were thinking about taking a trip to the United States. This was down from 50% who were considering a trip in November. April 2025 was the 4th consecutive month that Canadian return trips (to the USA) were down, and a major reason for the terrible return travel numbers could be the substantially fewer trips Canadians have made to the US in recent months.
On May 12th, Statistics Canada released data from April showing that return travel from the United States by vehicle totaled 1.2 million. That number might sound like a lot, but Global News pointed out that it was down by 32.5% from US return travel in April 2024. Return trips from the United States by air were also down significantly in April. Statistics Canada reported air travel returns from the US only reached 582,700. This was down 19% and a terrible statistic considering total Canadian returns via air in April were up 9.9% overall. “This shift is so unique. It’s driven by political and economic conflict,” explained Kiefer Van Mulligen, Senior Economist at the Conference Board of Canada and the report’s author. Van Mulligen added that 2025 was previously set to be a return to normal travel.
According to Van Mulligen, Canada’s travel industry still had yet to stabilize following the disruptions of the global pandemic. The 2025 travel year was set to be a return to a more normal level of travel but Donald Trump’s threats against Canada ignited a way of “buy Canadian" sentiment. Canadians aren’t just planning to buy Canadian goods, they’re also planning to spend their travel dollars anywhere but the United States. Bloomberg News noted the Conference Board’s intention survey found Canadians intend to increase their travel abroad, just not to the US. The Conference Board’s travel intention survey discovered most Canadians were planning to even shift their travel plans to domestic destinations, which is why the nation’s travel sector could be set to see a huge economic windfall. “We might actually see some people spending more than usual on a domestic trip, traveling farther, staying longer, things like that,” Van Mulligan explained. “Even under more conservative assumptions, it seems like a net positive for tourism this year.”
The Conference Board’s findings make a lot of sense. The most recent polling from the Canadian market research firm Leger, which was published June 5th, found that 37% of Canadians who had made plans to travel to the US chose to cancel those plans. In early May, another survey conducted by Leger on behalf of the Association for Canadian Studies revealed that 52% of respondents agreed with the statement that “it is no longer safe for all Canadians traveling to the United States” according to the National Post. Interestingly, 54% said they didn’t feel welcomed in the United States anymore. This sentiment may be playing its own role in preventing Canadians from traveling to the United States amid the ongoing political and trade tension between the two countries.
The Conference Board’s report also predicted that the weaker Canadian dollar has also likely played a role in some decisions to spend more travel dollars in Canada. Fears over a possible tariff-induced economic slowdown are also influencing the situation. Whether or not Canada will see a major rise in ‘staycations’ and domestic travel has yet to be seen, but the country seems ripe to experience a domestic travel renaissance. however, only time will tell if such a situation will see an economic travel boost in the billions.
