The overwhelming problem, as I said, is time. Using current technology it would take 6,300 years to fly to Proxima Centauri, the nearest star not counting the Sun. Even at the speed of light it would take 4.22 years (and the same time to return).I would say the hard data collected on the effects of space on the human body, etc, has great value.
Some day technology (likely advanced exponentially by AI) will allow for humans to truly become a space-faring species, and every bit of data collected now will contribute to that happening.
I do believe “Starship to Mars” is a fools (narcissists) errand, but it does serve to inspire; so not a total waste. The Earth’s moon seems far more practical for learning the ropes and serving as a gateway to space travel (IF we’re determined to pursue the grail of colonizing other moons & planets and mining asteroids, etc.)
Yeah, that’s why I specifically included the prospect (possibility) of FUTURE AI contributing to a technological solution. (I actually believe that is needed to make even the colonization / exploitation of rocky objects in the solar system feasible.)
CURRENT technology (including “Starship” and other SpaceX offerings) is woefully inadequate for even the colonization of the moon, let alone Mars, imho, but that doesn’t mean human ingenuity and advanced AI won’t solve the problems associated with space travel, space mining, terraforming, and space colonization.
