It’s the Little Things…

Alright we talked about THE WORST. Now how about the best things; the types of things that you almost take for granted. The little things. What are those comforting moments or items, or sounds, or smells, etc. that surprisingly make difficult days tolerable somehow?

(picture below in case it disappears, says “Careful! We may quickly get used to most things and easily forget how amazing they are.” And there are sketches of things like a flower, coffee mug, a cat, a bird, a star, etc)

Is this question more difficult to answer or easier than naming what are some first world problems we have? Why or why not?

I’ve been working my butt off all day and it was pouring rain outside (and pretty damn cold for the end of May), but when I went outside to get the garbage cans, there was that clean rain smell. Even though the day was kind of miserable, everything smelled fresh. It was nice.

This was the first thing I thought of, too. The smell of the rain. I take my dog out for walks, well… very frequently because he’s a young shepherd, but also just because I enjoy it too. My favorite time to go is right after it rains in the springtime in the morning. The smell is so fresh, the mist that rises off of the path, that earthy aroma that the rain brings out, the birds… all of it. 🌧️🌫️🐦‍⬛🌳 It turns my mood around. It clears my head.

Petrichor :)

It isn't just the smell. Even the word is wonderful.

Right now is a comforting moment... I like to bake, so I'm enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning with some fresh baked bread and a good cup of coffee. Sunday with The Beatles -- a weekly radio show -- quietly plays.

The first one that comes to mind for me is the smell of the ocean... I see others are talking about the smell after rain, funny how smell can help relax us so much!

Running toward a sunrise
Quiet mornings with coffee
That half hour or so just before sunrise when the birds know the sun is coming before I do and they announce it......

I didn't do the last one but yes of course this one is harder. Pain for whatever reason is more memorable than pleasure

My teddy bear that I’ve had since I was born, Mr. noodles soup with egg in it, Dancing Queen by ABBA, the movie Overboard, a crystal from my grandparents chandelier, handwritten cards, Christmas decorations, being near water, the smell of lavender. My mom.

Indoor plumbing is the best thing until it becomes the worst first world problem.

I love the excitement of watching a movie or reading a book and it being so much more than you thought it would be going in.

I love random conversations with strangers (don’t worry introverts I’m good at reading body language and meeting energy with energy)

I love face to face conversations with old friends.

I love when my cat gets so excited to be pet she falls over polishing against my hand.

I love when my dogs thump their tails against the floor just because they hear my voice.

I love tacos. And burritos. And falafel and well lots of food.

Honestly I think I’m way better at acknowledging the small things that make me happy that I may neglect the bigger things I should probably be working on 🤣

Ooo, ooo. Pick me! Oh, it looks like I’m first.

I spoke too soon.

The sounds of children playing and laughing on a school playground is numero uno for me.
After covid when I’d work from home is used to walk my dog at lunch every day and the elementary school on the route was usually out. This is a sound of pure joy. High point of the day.

The sound and smell of the ocean. The sound of water running over rocks. Having all the music at my fingertips through the internet. Cats. Dogs. Capybara. A soft breeze on a warm, but not too hot, day.

Oooh, dogs, how could I forget that! Especially taking mine for a walk and watching her be so happy sniffing around.

What do you bake? Baking is science! It is difficult to get right! You have to be exact- you can’t really just wing it. I’m not good at being exact so I’m always impressed by those who have the discipline to. Loved this. Thank you for sharing

I crave that ocean air. I am right with you and I totally get this. 🩷

Early morning is my favorite time of the day and is on my Little Things list too.
My teddy bear that I’ve had since I was born, Mr. noodles soup with egg in it, Dancing Queen by ABBA, the movie Overboard, a crystal from my grandparents chandelier, handwritten cards, Christmas decorations, being near water, the smell of lavender. My mom.
I read this and teared up a little bit. 🥹 (I’m emotional. You’ll get to know that about me. Can’t help it). 🤷‍♀️ If you are one to write poetry, I feel like what you shared here almost writes itself. I loved it.

The thump thump thump of my dogs tail … I feel like my heartbeat aligns with that sound. 🐾 🐾

The water is so restorative and calming. Yes to all of this.

the clink of his collar. Footprints left in the tub.

After my other dog passed, I used to ask somehow for him to leave his footprints in the tub to let me know he’s ok. That didn’t happen. But, we adopted another dog recently and he has taken up that charge. 🐾 🐾

All the things that come to mind for me are water related. Maybe it's the sun coming up or going down over the water, maybe the sound of waves or the trickle of moving water over rocks, the sound of rain on the roof, even just a quiet spot on the river's edge off the running path I'm lucky enough to use here.

What will be our first assignment?

The Hills Have Thighs?
Sex Machina?
Hand Solo: A Star Whores Story?
E.T.-The Extra Testicle?
You’ve Got Male?
Village of the Rammed?
Saturday Night Beaver?

Brassiere to Eternity?
King Dong?
Romancing the Bone?
Bitanic?
My Bare Lady?
Womb Raider?

Or did you have something dirty in mind?
I feel like you might have considered this type of thing before. 🤔
