Trump vs Universities

Harvard decided to poke the bear and they are going to pay dearly. Grants are NOT rights, they're privileges subject to revocation. Tax exempt status is NOT a right, it is a privilege.

Why anyone would pay the tuition they ask to attend a Univ. whose administration behaves so stupidly is beyond me.
The schools motto should be "de armento cacas" instead of "Veritas."

So you've never been to a university?

The DOJ is currently investigating civil rights violations and fraud.

Exactly. Harvard hasn’t been charged with any crime and certainly hasn’t been found guilty, as I said. 👍

So, why do you support the government punishing (retracting grants, removing ability to admit foreign students, removing tax exempt status) a private university that hasn’t been found guilty of anything?

It’s very authoritarian for a government to lash out at any private institution, business or person before they’re found guilty of a crime.

Well ? They did invent the term, “Lawfare”

Harvard dared to declare itself above coercion

It should have kissed the Orange Ass as demanded

The new Tax Bill includes a tax on nonprofit universities’ endowments.
  • Tax is on investment income, not net income of the university. Net income would be far less.
  • Religious colleges are exempt, because Republicans will always pander to religious nutters.
  • The tax is purely punitive. MAGAs hate education and intellectuals.
  • Republicans are solidifying their role as the party of new taxes.
To be equivalent to the corporate income tax, the tax on universities would have to be levied on their net income. Universities, however, typically have little or no net income, because they use the income from their endowment to make up for operating losses (including student aid) and to pay for capital investments (which this legislation wouldn’t allow them to depreciate).

Suppose the House bill proposed a new tax that was structured the same way as the tax on university endowments but applied generally to for-profit businesses and nonprofit corporations such as health care systems, many of which have large capital reserves. All corporations would then be taxed on their income from capital reserves but not allowed to deduct any losses from operations. That proposed tax would be denounced, especially by conservatives, as outrageously unfair; some would undoubtedly call it unconstitutional.

The bill excludes religiously affiliated colleges and universities such as Notre Dame from a tax that it imposes on secular institutions.

The same legislation that taxes university endowments more heavily reduces taxes on the rich and even includes new tax breaks for corporations shifting profits abroad. So why would a party supported by the ultra-rich, and bending over backwards to benefit the ultra-rich, want to tax wealth, in the specific form of university endowments? Because, in J.D. Vance’s words, “Universities are the enemy.”

Trump signed an executive order to prevent foreign students from attending Harvard.

He’s pretending the foreign students are a national security risk! Authoritarian regimes come up with the dumbest justifications for their actions. 😆

Harvard in a statement called Trump’s proclamation “yet another illegal retaliatory step taken by the Administration in violation of Harvard’s First Amendment rights.”

MAGA sheep think it’s perfectly fine for the government to harass private institutions and businesses. Such obedient brain-dead sheep.

Trump continues to throw tantrums about universities. Now he’s trying to get Columbia’s accreditation taken away.

The latest attack comes after some students voiced their displeasure at graduation ceremonies. As an authoritarian, Trump hates freedom of speech.
we are dealing with an immature, irrational actor playing for attention while carrying out a repressive agenda. never to take responsibility for his actions or inactions. we educate the best and the brightest. this administration wants to drag everyone to their nonsensical level.

So you didn't corroborate the information and instead are just searching for confirmation bias.

Thanks for confirming

It still amazes me that (fake) conservatives support an attempt by the federal government to take control of a private university’s hiring, admissions and curriculum. And the (fake) conservatives support the tools of coercion used in that attempt — banning foreign students from enrolling, pulling research grants, threatening to remove tax-exempt status, and “investigating” the university on trumped-up charges.

MAGA sheep simply have no beliefs of their own.
