1984 speak in 2025

The actual chant originated during apartheid as a chant for the oppressed. There is debate whether it should be retired and some folks still see a need for it.

But please, tell us more about the white genocide in South Africa

Fifty nine South Africans have decided that being alongside Apartheid Musk is better than listening to people demand the return of their stolen land, so are whining about being the victims.

They could have paid their $5m to Trump for fast-track admission, but now have to wait their turn in asylum centers. Just kidding, they will be fast-tracked anyway.

Which book?
1984.
It is by George Orwell.
I read it in...9th grade maybe?
I am in the minority of people though that did not care for it. Nor did I enjoy Brave New World. 1984 was better though.
But perhaps I was tainted because reading for enjoyment vs reading for analysis and writing essays are far different.

edit: I read it in 10th.

I never read 'Brave New World' I get you didn't care for it but is it worth reading in its own right? I keep meaning to read Animal Farm but. . . after watching the cartoon JUST for lulz it seems like George (in his own way) was the same as Ayn Rand. As in if you've read 'Atlas Shrugged' you don't really NEED to read 'Fountainhead' you already got the message.

There are plenty of classics I enjoyed...The sun also rises is a fave. Fahrenheit 451. Heart of Darkness. Billy Budd. Death of a Salesman. Puddnhead Wilson. Most Shakespeare Ive read.
And some I hated.
Glass Menagerie. Brave New World. Don Quixote.

is it worth reading? Likely. Just wasnt my cup of tea.

I liked 1984 and Animal Farm.

Considering how often they’re referenced, it’s certainly useful to read them.

Well I meant more as an educational tool not just a piece of literature. I do need to brush up on some classics to be sure but I have a line up of novels I need to start chipping away at. I write for fun and sometimes I even get paid. I'm trying to make sure I've read all the things people really like to reference if only to see if they are used in the proper context.

That's why I mentioned Ayn's writing. While I. . .honestly think she missed her own point somehow cus I'm not against the philosophy she puts forth as a whole, I still don't need to read everything to get her. I went through a phase in late high school and when I was in the Corps and I either read every one of her primary works or I missed one after realizing I already knew it. Nobody ever read 'Anthem' so i only get brownie points with the inner party so to speak for that one.

Thank you.

It's a subtler dystopia than 1984. No rational person would want to live in Oceania, even as a member of the Inner Party elite. Huxley's World State is more tempting -- the people have everything but freedom. Society is divided into genetically engineered castes, from Alpha geniuses to Epsilon morons, but the lower castes are not exploited by the upper -- they are simply designed to be happy doing menial work. In material terms, everybody enjoys the same high standard of living.

It's similar, but Animal Farm is a quick read - you could probably get through it in one sitting. And then you'll know why the right-wingers who are always quoting the last line have it exactly backwards. :)
Heaven forbid, that they should actually read anything they post
Oh, they probably read quite a bit of it - they just don't understand it.

It's THAT short. I guess the next time I go to the local library I'll check it out. Thanks

OTher than some of the finer details Oceana doesn't seem THAT different from what we have now just with fewer moving parts and more "magic" but I get how the magic works. By magic I mean how the state keeps the level of control they do but I got to witness a minature version of a police state up close and in person when I joined the military and. . .man 'The Prisoner's Gambit' should be taught to all children in grade school.

Written in 1948 as a warning about totalitarianism and about the future. It’s incredibly prescient, and somehow the rightists here have latched on to it but either misinterpret it or haven't read it.
There's no great mystery to how that happened. They're all about hating and fearing the government, as well as accusing the other side of things they are actually guilty of. 1984 is a perfect blueprint for that, and their lack of critical thinking skills combined with their unwillingness to see what's really going on means of course they're going to miss the real point.

Many who have heard of Orwell don't know that he was a self-ID'd Socialist to the end of his life.

Animal Farm is the story of a revolution gone wrong -- but there's nothing in it to suggest the revolution was a bad idea, or that there was anything wrong with Old Major's vision. Presumably things would be fine if only the pigs were of better character.
