Edited story has not replaced original

I have just had an edited version of a story go live. The main change is that it combines two separate parts, previously published under a different name.

In the rubric, I explicitly asked for the new version to replace the old part 1 (preserving scores, comments, etc.) but instead it has been published as a completely new story, leaving the old version in place.

What should I do?

I suspect your problem is that you've combined two parts into one, AND added the double whammy of a different user name.

If you want the new User Name, you can't use the old story Chapter 1, because that's in your old User Name. That's Logic 101 in my book.

PM Laurel, asking for another go around, is all you can do. You've confused the kittens, that's for sure.

Ah, okay. That will confuse the system. With an edit, you retain the original title, but you've submitted a new story, with a different title.

You'll need to ask for one of them to be deleted.

If I were you, I'd resubmit the edit against the original title (the only way to keep the scores and comments) and ask for the later version to be deleted.

That's the frustrating thing … I did ask for that.

I have PM'ed her, so let's see if that fixes the problem before I introduce another copy into the system.

In the wrong order, by the sounds of it. Should only ever have been an edit - seems to me that the title change buggered it all up.

A title change - to get rid of "part 1" - was always necessary. I guess there must be some automation in the background.

It will be two steps next time … if I ever need to.

I did similar a few years back, asking for all of my individual chapters for four stories be replaced with a single file that combined them into a respective submission under the proper title for each. I PM'd Laurel first and she informed me that she could do that, but all comments and scores from the chapters would be lost, and the new submission would be ineligible for contests.

I suggest that you directly to Laurel.

And they would have, if he hadn't combined four stories into one. As it was, the other three stories (now vanished) had nowhere for their stats to go anymore.

Only when you edit. If you submit a new title it's treated as a new story, and your stats start from scratch.

Yes, the chapter joining together process is automatic:

Title Title
Title Title Pt.02

will automatically join together. You don't need to chapter number the first part - the algorithm picks up on the common title text, then follows an alphanumeric sequence.

Title Title - Annie
Title Title - Barbie
Title Title - Charlie

will also join together.

Or, you can use the Manual Series capability, if your story titles don't follow an alphanumeric sequence.

They were four stories, each with multiple chapters posted. Each had all the chapters replaced by the whole story instead. This was a "edit" (change) to how the stories were published and not simply an edit to the stories' content.

I have also had titles changed to previously published stories, with no changes to the stories themselves. This was accomplished by sending a PM to Laurel. In those instances, none of the stats were affected.

Did you mark the new title as Edited? Did you then expressedly mention in the notes that you were submitting an edited story AND changing the name? You have to spell out exactly what is going on. You will know you screwed something up if it goes live in a couple of days, an edited story takes weeks to get through Laurals huge stack of work. I am editing a 15 part story, I know what you're going through. You NEED to follow the rules spelled out here
