I get this as a Surgical Assistant. An MRI is a 3D image that allows for a better view for procedures. While an xray is great for bone density, an MRI will show cartilage, tendons, ligaments, nerves, joint spaces, fluid in joint spaces, and other soft tissues.

Oh I am sure an MRI has benefits beyond an Xray but the 3 compressed vertebrae easily visible in the Xray should have been sufficient imo

MRI's are not true 3D images, they are 2D slices that can be reconstructed into a 3D image, they are more like a high quality 2D image in multiple planes~
MRI data are fundamentally acquired as 2D slices with thickness

MRI is more diagnostic. The nature of the compression /fracture can be differentiated and outcome and treatment decided in a non-invasive way.
