If people who buy in Indian rice can't get Indian rice, what will they do?
They'll buy Chinese rice, or American rice, etc.
If you suddenly have more buyers bidding for less product, the buyers will bid more to try to make sure they're the ones who get it.


Question: If you go to the store for basmati and find it out of stock, will you switch to eating curry and mashed potatoes, or just buy a bag of long-grain instead?

I know India exports a fuckton of rice, and any interruption in production or export would raise the price of rice worldwide, so…

And there ARE a variety of crude oils (refined at specific refineries) from various sources / countries, and the interruption of the production or export from any of those sources / countries affects the price worldwide, so…

Well you don't seem to understand that one type of rice is not interchangable with other types to create the shortage you preparing for but hey wherever you see any rice shortages from war or otherwise let me know so you can pretend to know something again

A couple of years ago, the Spanish olive oil harvest basically failed. A combination of drought and fire.
Other places grow olives. There's a HUGE number of alternative oils that people could use.
And what happened to the price of olive oil?

Pakistan looked at the video footage that India claimed was "proof" and said "Praise Allah for high resolution photography!

Increase magnification to 100x and you can see these are Indian drones that are made in India for the Indian military....they're not Pakistani drones coming "back to Pakistan", they're Indian military drones going INTO Pakistan".

I also buy mulyipurchase deals and special offers to store for later, and have an extra freezer in the garage for when I batch cook,

Sure, one dolf doing something / being affected doesn’t amount to much - but a billion + dolfs doing something / being affected IS a big fucking deal.

And rice is just one purchase that is affected by tariffs, war, etc, so you can multiply those billion + dolfs by every purchase they make.

And now factor in the effect on the financial markets, etc, as a billion + dolfs all change their buying habits at the same time ("panic" / "precautionary" buying usually accompanies major upheavals / interruptions in the global supply chain caused by trade wars AND war-wars.



“Cause & effect” PLUS “The Yuuuuge Dumb Orange Butterfly Effect” equals a global crisis.

With the great toilet paper crises during the pandemic, something triggered the panic buying, which created the shortage, which triggered panic buying. I think perhaps it was that everyone was feeling the effects of the pandemic daily.
Going back to the example of olive oil, despite there being an entire season of news stories mentioning how the freak weather would hit the supply chain, there was no panic buy. Similarly, there's no mass rush to buy rice. I don't think individuals stocking up is going to more than a ripple.

The very poor may opt out of rice completely, but the official national dish of the UK is chicken tikka masala, so that gives you some idea of how popular a plate of basmati is. Indian/Pakistani basmati is part of a weekly tradition for a hell of a lot of brits, so I predict a lot of "bloody inflation! " on curry nights.
