And Virginia Republicans have no one to blame but themselves

When Virginia voters elected businessman Glenn Youngkin as their governor in 2021, the Republican’s victory derailed years of Democratic gains across the commonwealth and even stirred speculation about Youngkin as a future presidential contender.

Less than four years later, Virginia’s Republican Party is on the verge of disaster thanks to an explosive scandal involving the party’s nominee for lieutenant governor and Youngkin’s baffling decision to embrace Donald Trump’s sweeping layoffs of federal workers, even though the state is home to over 340,000 federal workers. Few Virginians talk seriously about a future President Youngkin anymore.

Reid didn’t just refuse the governor’s request. He released a video on social media denying the allegations. Trump-aligned Republican voters rallied around Reid and his message of MAGA persecution. “The governor made a big mistake” asking Reid to drop out, Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, told a Virginia news station. “He really stepped in it.”

Then, late last month, Reid accused Matt Moran, Youngkin’s top political strategist, of defaming and extorting him in an effort to push Reid off the ballot. Moran strongly denied the claims, even providing a sworn affidavit individually disputing each of Reid’s accusations. Moran’s all-out defense barely lasted a day before damaging audio recordings emerged that showed Moran had, in fact, done exactly what Reid accused him of doing.
in today's political world, how can these idiots still be so naive about technology and how the receipts will come back and blow up in your face???

This is what gets me:

From one of the articles linked in butters post:

“The conversation came at the height of a growing crisis inside the Virginia GOP, as party leaders wrestled with how to handle damaging material linked to Reid, a conservative radio host and the first openly gay candidate on a statewide ticket in Virginia history.”

😳

Whenever I see the words “conservative” and “openly gay candidate” (openly-gay-any-occupation / person, really) in the same sentence, I just smfh.

😑

We. Told. Them. So.

Some people just love their money that much!

As for Youngkin, remember, he got elected in the first place by distancing himself from Trump. It's beyond me how he could see the need to do that then but not now.

Youngkin's support for laying off Federal workers statistically breaks in his favor since 70% of Federal worker's political donations go to Democrats and then, ergo, roughly 70% of Federal workers can be expected to be Democrat.

What support he might lose from Republican Federal workers will be more than offset by the decline in monetary donations to the Democrats.

It's some evil political calculus but they all do it.

"The Prince shocked many readers by assuming that immoral acts are justifiable if they achieve political glory"

Wrong. As far back as 1990 - when the DC suburbs were still red-leaning - a Republican congressman made that same bet and voted against against a budget bill, triggering a government shutdown in October, and he lost.

I guess we will see. In any case Democrat dollars tend to speak for the Democrats. Cutting those dollars is not going to be a net negative even for a squidgy Republican.

But laying them off will devastate the local private-sector economy -- and everyone will know which party to blame for that.

Tell it to James Gilmore, the last Republican governor of Virginia, who made similar gambles. There's a reason why you haven't heard anything about him since then.

a white 'conservative' radio host with a gay partner who just happens to be....wait for it....black.

And the news account doesn't even mention his partner's race.
We've come a loooong way, Robin!
....but they did post a picture of him.
Holy dog whistles, Batman! Maybe we haven't come a long way after all!

The Virginia Republican infighting is quite similar to what’s happening in Florida.

MAGAs can’t resist turning on each other?
