It depends on the sentence, of course, but I have mixed them. I had to at one point: as a dare from my professor in a creative writing class I put a grammatically correct 3000 word sentence in a story.

Other than that, I avoid semicolons except in complicated lists. I find it a weak punctuation mark. (Half-assed, you might say). I would rather make two separate sentences than combine them with a semicolon.
