✨Highlights and Bombshells💥

The voice threads do interest me, and I lurk in them occasionally.

It's always interesting to hear what people sound like. But I think people often have a different tone when they're saying something out loud, as opposed to writing. Has anyone else felt that?
God I have some catching up to do. But that's the point of this thread isn't it?

I find I fair better at writing than talking. I get my thoughts in order and can make sure I've put all my points across in a hopefully coherent way. But maybe my automatic editing does change my tone?
When I talk on vocaroo or the voice note features on the apps I find I can't keep focused as much. I "um" and "er" a lot! I enjoy it though as it can feel like having a real conversation even though I wander away on tangents and forget to come back to the point more often than not.
Which is the more authentic me though I wonder.

Go back to a random page from years ago and see what all the strangers of Lit were talking about back in the olden times.
I do this all the time.
I was reading one the other day that was I think in the Author forum from years back. The op had started it to rate people's AV's. He was a bit rude in tone and other posters gleefully piled on but part of the early conversation was them all discussing the formation of the Politics forum and I found that to be really interesting.

I also once found a discussion thread from the whole "Brianna" controversy. Probably started by @Lord Pmann but I might be wrong. That interested me because it was well before my time here but the fallout is still referenced to this day. I believe that thread also introduced the world to @TotallyNotTaegul too which was fun.

Do self help books work? If so, have you found any that you would recommend?
I think they can absolutely offer insight. As I think someone else mentioned, some of these books are written by people without the educational or professional background to back up their claims. It doesn’t mean their words are useless, but it is something to acknowledge.

My first thought was that I don’t read a lot of self-help books, but a quick google of the genre tells me that I’ve read quite a few. I’m a social worker so I think that some of them were read with the intent of furthering my knowledge there vs personal self help but they’ve done both.

I don’t trust any one size fits all approach, but I think that you can find some really beneficial strategies and introspection from these books.

Here’s a few I’ve read that I would recommend:

How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis. A very short, very powerful read for anyone who has had significant mental health struggles, particularly depression. I highly recommend checking out her stuff on social media as well. She’s a fucking delight and her self-compassionate approach is something I think a lot of us need more of.

When The Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress by Gabor Maté. Discusses the connection between chronic stress and its physical manifestations.

The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel van der Kolk. Trauma and its effect on the brain and body, neuroplasticity, healing from trauma when traditional therapies have not been beneficial.

The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. An examination of the effects of smart phone usage on children&teens development. Strategies to combat this. Highly recommend for parents of elementary aged kids but a good call to action for all.

Fair Play by Eve Rodsky. The distribution of labor in a household. Discusses hidden labor, common patterns, ways to redistribute fairly. I only rated this one a 3/5 because the book itself is meh, but I think the ideas she talks about are so important and highlight elements that cause a lot of marital stress. KC Davis, the first author I mentioned, talked a lot about this book/method on her social media, so I was already pretty familiar with the concept by the time I read the book. And then the book itself is kind of repetitive. That being said, I still think it’s worthwhile for people who are sharing domestic labor.

I'm gonna investigate a couple of those. Thank you 😊

I dunno. Self help books and resources bring out a really rare stubborn "I don't need this shit, I can figure it out alone" side to me. And that side is a delusional liar 🤣 because there are many parts of my life I really do need help with.

Maybe it's the tone? I don't know... I can read reddit posts or blogs from people talking about similar struggles to mine and what helped them and I find it really useful to relate in that way but to get a book that professes to have a easy cure in a gentle (patronising) tone gets my heckles up.

This is an interesting sidestep from personal development or growth. Looking at yourself through the lens of your zodiac sign can be an enlightening experience. Do you feel like the qualities of your sign fit your personality? Why or why not? If you’ve done your chart, you’ll know that everyone has a number of signs that reveal a lot about us. (There are a lot of sites that will calculate your chart; all you need is your birthdate, birth time, and birth place. If you don’t know the time, an approximation is usually ok.) It’s fun to hear what people’s Sun, Moon, Rising, Mercury, Venus and Mars are, and then a bonus for other planets. Then there are the houses… but anyway…that’s pretty personal. There are parts of my chart that I agree with and parts that I don’t see. I’d be curious to know who else has an interest in astrology.

Taking it too far or putting all of the blame for your problems on being a certain sign, etc. is unhealthy and not realistic, obviously. That sort of dependence on it is problematic to say the least.

Now, I know that this is a real turnoff, for lack of a better word, for some people, too. Sometimes when I discuss this with a mixed crowd of friends, I get some eye-rolling or scoffs. And that’s ok, too. But I love it and so I’m curious if others here do too and what your thoughts are.

I’ve always found it interesting, though I know there’s no science behind it lol I’m Cancer with Pisces rising and moon, so a lot of water. I can’t remember what the others are but there’s just a lot of water in my chart 😂 I also don’t remember anymore what it means, except that it’s no surprise that I’m an introvert 🤣

A friend of mine is all into astrology and moon phases and all that fun stuff. I keep meaning to ask her to do me a chart actually. I'm not sure I'll learn anything about myself but it could still be interesting.

Its late here and I've had wine but I'll try and remember tomorrow to try one of those sites and share anything good.

I find it interesting.

And like all things, I don't take it as telling me what to do. But giving me things to consider that I may not have thought of.
Like most of the things I'm into. I make my own decisions. And mistakes. But if I can get what I feel is guidance and insight to help me then what's the harm?

I'm Gemini, with my moon in Capricorn. I find it accurate enough to help me know myself a little better.

I do too. Like everything, I take it with a grain of salt. But I do think that it helps me to be insightful and a lot of it makes me pause and say, whoa… that’s really close. Also other parts of my chart make me think, ugh I’m not really like that am I 👀 ??

I’m an Aries, with Leo moon and rising. All fire. I don’t feel theatrical and dramatic. I do feel passionate and impulsive and hotheaded. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve tried to rein in some of that. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t.

What are the dates for Aries now? I’m April 17

It’s probably a surprise to no one who knows me well, but I put as much stock in astrology as I do fortune cookies and psychic readings. That doesn’t mean I don’t think it’s occasionally fun to read horoscopes, see what is said about my sign, and proclaim I’m going to be very lucky because my cookie said so 😂

The only time it’s really a turn off to me is when people make decisions based on these things or talk about them constantly like it’s a super important part of their life. Or if someone is being taken advantage of (charging a lot for readings, promising things, exploiting people’s grief, etc.) Otherwise, to each their own.

I do wonder though if most people were given write ups without the label if they’d actually choose their correct sign, moon, rising, etc. I suspect most would find it difficult because they’d find things in many descriptions across all options that they both identify with and things that didn’t describe them.

I do like trying to guess sometimes. :)

Scorpio here. Haven’t done a chart. The passion, intensity, and loyalty all match up. I don’t think I’m particularly mysterious or magnetic. Demanding and difficult to handle might not be completely off the mark.
