Witkoff is pushing for the US to recognize the four regions Russia illegally annexed as a means toward peace. This is exceedingly stupid. Its even more insane when you realise the current frontline in Kherson is on the Dnipr river and this would grant territory beyond it. Easy staging area for further russian attacks.

It is lunacy to expect Ukraine to give up people and territory without a fight — people and territory they have successfully defended for three years and that Russia cannot take by force. The majority of Ukrainians do not even support giving up the people and territory under Russian occupation right now. Nobody would countenance adding more to that.

It’s also idiotic to think the Europeans would support peace on these terms. Even though they were late to start, they are gearing up. Putin’s folly is going to leave Russia confronting a unified Europe without the restraining influence of a retreating America. Whatever security concerns the geniuses in Moscow had about NATO, they are going to find it a lot harder to deal with Europe now. And Europe will back Ukraine to the hilt. The Iron Curtain dropped where it did in 1945 because there were millions of Soviet troops occupying the territories they claimed as their sphere of influence and the West did not have the will to fight them over it. Nobody will be inviting the Russian horde to take ownership of parts of Europe. Witkoff and Trump may not care but it isn’t their call to make.

This policy will also backfire on the U.S., which is establishing itself more and more firmly with every day that passes as being completely unreliable as a partner and ally. We may all decry the consequences of abandoning Afghanistan but they will pale in comparison to what amounts to a complete betrayal of the principles upon which our own security rests. America cannot go it alone — it's as simple as that. Trump is ensuring that we will have to, without friends or allies, not een Canada (who are already realigning with the EU and potentially with China) and not only that. he has started a trade war with China unprepared, and that the USA will lose.

China knows this. Look at their reaction at Trump’s insane policies: reassuring their trade partners, many of whom (Japan and South Korea for example) conduct more trade with China than with the USA, and offering all sorts of deals. Our moron in chief blabs about other countries lining up to kiss his ass. What a demented clown! Not only does he not have all the cards, he’s quite a few cards short of a full deck.

He's lost ALL our allies and friends - they are now only dealing with us while it's convenient. Instead of using this war to cement closer ties with the EU and the UK, he has destroyed the relationship. He has taken the country with what will be the strongest military and the largest defense industry in Europe (Ukraine) and turned them from what would have been an inalienable friend and trading partner into what will be. when the war is over, a country that regards us as hostile and a threat. No country in the world will be able to look at the USA as anything other than a threat in future - when will they be betrayed for some mineral or oil rights, or their economy sabotaged on a whim.

Aside from anything else, Trump has just about guaranteed that the USA's time as THE world superpower is over, and that the next century is Chinese.

Europe really needs to face reality here and go it alone, without the USA involved at all. The only way to end this war now is to cut the USA out of the loop and defeat Russia.

I guess the "good" thing is, the way Trump has screwed up on tariffs, the economic impacts of that looming catastrophe will very shortly distract him from Ukraine and Russia.
