Aircraft Carrier USS Harry S. Truman Collides with Large Cargo Ship Off the Coast of Egypt​

The USS Harry S. Truman collided with a Panamanian-flagged cargo ship, the Besiktas-M, off the coast of Egypt.

The U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet reported that the collision did not result in flooding or injuries aboard the Truman, and the ship’s propulsion plants remain in a safe and stable condition.

“The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Besiktas-M at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time, Feb. 12, while operating in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea,” the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet announced.

“The collision did not endanger the Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as there are no reports of flooding or injuries. The propulsion plants are unaffected and in a safe and stable condition. The incident is under investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available.”

It's good the aircraft carrier is all right, but what happened to the cargo ship?
 
Are commanders responsible once again for everything that occurs under their command?

I know that rule was turned upside down back when Dubya was president, Acting President Cheney declared going forward that troops were now responsible for the questionable actions of their commanders (see: Abu Gharib).

As far as I know, every Captain who runs aground or collides with another ship is unlikely to remain in command. In the last year the Navy has cashiered a large number of high profile commanders.

It has some damage but is continuing its trip. The question will be how a carrier with electronic situational awareness for hundreds of miles, and dozens of watchstanders on duty at any given time manages to collide with another ship?

Obviously it's a pre-emptive attack by the Panamanian Navy to save their canal. Unfortunately the guidance systems mistook Suez for Panama. :)

The captain of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that slammed into a ship near Egypt last week was yanked from the position “due to a loss of confidence in his ability,” the US Navy said Thursday.

Capt. Dave Snowden was “relieved” of his job at the helm of the USS Harry S. Truman and temporarily reassigned following the wild Feb. 12 crash in the Mediterranean Sea, according to the military branch.

“The U.S. Navy holds commanding officers to the highest standard and takes action to hold them accountable when those standards are not met,” the Navy said in a statement.
