Depends if they have those Nest things…then it’s up to our Overlords….I haven't lived in an apartment in 28 years. Is this the landlord's job or the tenant's?
What is this thread about, exactly?
I've never heard of stereotypes regarding race in changing smoke detectors. Are there actual stereotypes or are you just finding random Internet memes?White supremacy. It's a terrible thing, this white supremacy and the underlying cultural expectations that go with it. Such as....changing batteries....
Memes about smoke detectors chirping simply speak to the idea that some people don't change the batteries in their home smoke detectors, leading to the machine emitting a repeated beeping signal to indicate that it needs a replacement. In the early 2020s, this unwillingness to change one's smoke detector batteries became a stereotype associated with Black people. HOwever, it seems there is, as with stereotypes in general, a solid basis of reality underlying this meme.
A 2021 report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed alarming statistics about home fires in the United States from 2016 to 2018. Annually, approximately 360,000 home fires result in around 2,400 deaths and nearly 10,400 injuries. Shockingly, research indicates that African Americans experience the highest rates of fire-related fatalities and injuries compared to other racial groups, with death rates nearly double the national average and injury rates more than twice as high. Despite representing 13% of the population, African Americans account for an estimated 24% of home fire deaths and 27% of injuries, according to the report.
While disparate discussions in Black communities about smoke alarm beeps have continued until 2020, the joke arguably gained viral traction due to a series of lighthearted TikTok videos posted by TikToker @damedamian. A brief skit posted by @damedamian showed the difference between "White people chillen in their house," and "Black people chillen in their house," with the only notable difference being the distant sound of a smoke alarm chirping in the latter scene. The video went immensely viral, gathering millions of views in the following months. The skit was also well-received by some Black users on the platform, such as TikToker @shaelovve, who stitched the video to join the joke and gathered over 20 million views herself.
While lighthearted jokes about smoke detector beeps continued to gain popularity after the aforementioned viral meme, the joke was also coopted by less sympathetic groups. A 4chan thread posted to the site's /pol/ board titled, "NEW DOGWHISTLE DROPPED" gathered several replies after it called Black Americans "Beeping Americans" in reference to the smoke alarm sound.
Now, does this meme have a basis in reality, which leads to this unfortunately high percentage of deaths, and does this have a basis in reality with the ignoring for smke detector beeps? Generallt, you find that where stereotypes exist, there's an underlying reality that supports that stereotype. Is this the case here?
Are you just creating these via AI?
LOL. They're everywhere. I'd never heard of this before and I find it both (1) hilarious and (2) if it's true, it's rather disturbing and (3) WTF??????Are you just creating these via AI?
