No, he had no point. If your only solution is to silence others, your argument is too weak to take seriously. At any time.

Silencing others wasn't the only solution of Marcuse or the New Left, nor was it even a solution they had the power to enforce, it was just talk -- "Let's not tolerate intolerance" is not an outrageous statement, so far as it goes, it really just means, "Let's shame it and never let anybody get away with assuming it is normal -- do not treat this as a thing about which reasonable minds can disagree." Good advice for all of us to follow today, and not any form or instance of tyranny. Applied here, it means, "Let's never pass up a chance to call out renard or Trouvere on their stupid racist bullshit, or let Bud get away with his endless lies about CRT."
