System: Miranda

The Miranda system was a worthless island in the big black sea of Human explored space. It was dominated by red supergiant that had utterly consumed the innerplanets of the system leaving a halo of asteroids basting in the heat and solar radiation of the scarlet monster at the system's heart. The system was utterly forgettable. It held no notable features. The asteroids were full of metals and minerals but nowhere near enough to justify the expense of building a mining operation all the way out here, not when the Atlas system mining outpost in the next system down-chain produced twice as much annually and far more in more exotic minerals. So, Miranda was a blip, a stop over on the way out to the new greener colonies funded by the Kingdom pushing Humanity reach further out into the deep black of the unexplored part of the Milky Way.
Nope, there was nothing here in Miranda of note, save for the debris field.
Rumor was that that a navy squadron had jumped through Wayford all the way here, something only navy ships could afford to do. A jump skipping three or more links in the hyperspace chain seriously drained the jumpgates humongous energy supercapacitors knocking them into an automatic maintenance cycle to recharge, but the navy squadron hadn't stopped and waited. Shockingly they had overridden the gate's maintenance cycle and hyperjumped back through to Wayford putting in emergency shutdown afterward for the next two days.
Wild speculation had swept through the chain from Wayford all the way to Scarborough. The only reason for the rapid jump in and jump back was a battle of some sort had been waged out here. So some people said maybe the Navy had intercepted another Korvathi raiding pack before the barbaric aliens could ravage yet another frontier colony world out here, though Callista seriously doubted that. It would mean the Navy had actually gotten off their lazy asses and done their job out here on the frontier of the Terran Interstellar Kingdom, and since there was a fat chance of that happening she remained skeptical, but it was clear something went on out here in Miranda. It was lucky for them they were the first salvagers out here to pick at the carcasses of the losers of the battle.
She stepped onto the bridge of the Leaf announcing, "Drones deployed, Captain. Beginning the scan now." She came up where her Captain of this ship was seated in his chair looking over his instruments and piloting the ship through the debris of broken ships. Somehting wasn't right here, but Callista couldn't quite put her finger on it. Maybe that was because she had other priorities. She spun his chair around away from his console and sat her big shapely ass down in his lap. "These are all warships hulls. We score some intact military-grade ship components not even that bitch, Auerbach, would be able to keep the buyers from throwing money at us for them."
She reached up claiming his face and planting her lips against his, they kissed for several seconds. "It's all thanks to you for figuring out the codes to get the gate to open back up and let us through before anyone else.... we're gonna be fucking rich after this haul."
The console behind them beeped signaling the drones were in position and commencing their detailed scan of the ship wreckage tumbling in the dense debris field ahead of them. "Ya know, Cap'n, Hammer, sir. It'll take the drones an hour or longer to complete their scans...and you know the prospect of getting fucking rich makes me fucking horny as shit, right?"
Smiling sultrily to her Superior officer Callista got up from his lap but pulled him up from the chair behind her. She began leading them to the wide viewport in front of the consoles giving them a view out to the scenic blandness that was the Miranda system. "It occurs to me that I have never had the pleasure of getting fucked up against the bridge viewport so the entire universe could see."
When they reached the viewport, she turned around and wrapped her arms around neck and kissed him again, "What do you say, Hammer. Wanna kill some time helping a girl out or what?"
