Hunter had gotten his nickname for good reason, and yet after a lifetime of killing, he hesitated as he snuck up behind the nearest of the Yuza with the intention of dispatching him. Hunter had never killed an animal that was more intelligent and more advanced than himself. As he'd lain with Gaia before sleep took him, he'd thought of all the lesser creatures who'd killed members of his village over the years, and he realized that this time he was the lesser creature.
Hunter was correct in one sense but incorrect in another. The Human Beings of Yuza III might have been far less technologically advanced than the planet's dominant indigenous species, but they were no less intelligent than them. Just like the Yuza, Human Beings had discovered and implemented faster than light interstellar travel. Sure, it had come almost 17,000 years later, at a time when the Yuza had already discovered, visited, and in some cases even settled numerous planets, moons, and other stellar bodies. But the Humans of Earth had managed it.
Of course, Hunter didn't know anything about this. The Elders had decided their tribe would abandon that history and start anew, in a primitive life. That didn't prevent Hunter from thinking of himself as the lesser intelligent being now, though. Of course, if he were the lesser species, could he have so easily snuck up behind and killed the keeper by grasping and pulling back his skull with one hand while the other sliced the bone knife across the Yuza's throat?
Hunter pulled his victim back behind the big boulder onto which he'd been urinating and dropped his quietly to the ground. Blood gushed in spurts from the deep wound, and within seconds the Human knew that the Yuza was dead. Hunter found himself just staring down upon the corpse for the longest time; his heart was pounding with the excitement of the kill like it never pounded before, not even when he and Gaia had nearly been killed by the large alien mammal that first day they'd been together in their enclosure.
His gaze shifted down the Yuzan' body, to his groin. Hunter couldn't help but look to the alien's manhood, still exposed through the vertical opening in his dirty, dark coveralls. It didn't look that much different than Hunter's own penis in shape and length, though, it was a pale white and light pinkish bands down its full length. Hunter had already believed that the Yuza likely bred in a way similar to his own people; most mammals on this planet did, after all.
His attention was drawn away from this, his closest encounter with a keeper yet, when he heard a loud thunk sound, followed by a Yuza calling out in apparent anger. Hunter looked out from behind the boulder just in time to see a Yuza keeper aim his strange weapon at one of the human slaves. The weapon leaped in his hand with a bright flash as the end, and a moment later the human before him seemed to jerk and twitch uncontrollably for a moment before falling to the ground. Hunter didn't understand that weapon at all; it didn't seem to loose a physical missile, like a bow propelled an arrow or a sling tossed a stone. And yet something had struck the human.
The other humans dropped to their knees, seeming to cower before the keepers. Hunter found himself suddenly very angry, and he wanted to charge the Yuza and kill them all. But he maintained control and waited, looking over his shoulder for the descending sun. The time to attack was only moments away; he need only be patient. He turned his attention back to the camp and found the humans rising to their feet as the Yuza keepers yelled at them. The punished man was helped to a standing position once more, and the work continued.
Then, the shadow of the cliff behind Hunter began making its way across the floor of the camp. And it was time. He looked across to the metal container behind which Gaia was hiding, met her gaze, and gestured her to a second smaller bin that was closer to the work area and about the same distance for the two of them. As she ran forward, hidden by the growing shadow and by the sun now fully in the eyes of the Yuza, Hunter pulled the bow from his back, notched an arrow, aimed carefully, and loosed the missile.
A second later, the keeper nearest him gave out a cry of pain as the metal shafted arrow sunk deep into his back. The pounded, sharpened tip cut through the aorta of his very human-like though 6 chambered heart, and the sudden drop in blood pressure to his brain caused him to become disoriented and then fall to the ground. He wouldn't die immediately, but any threat he might have posed to Hunter was now null.
The human archer aimed a second arrow at a Yuza who was confused by what was happening. The keeper looked to his human slaves, finding non of them presenting any threat, then turned back sunward and shaded his eyes. He never say the arrow that a moment later penetrated his throat just barely above his rib cage. His knees moved forward, his upper torso back, and a moment later he thudded to the hard ground, also on his way toward death.
Hunter picked up the spears he'd dropped before attacking the first male and ran forward quickly. He tossed the bow to Gaia -- she had the quiver as Hunter had only taken with him two arrows and told her, "Protect Hunter."
Then without slowing, he ran as fast as he could toward the nearest of the two remaining Yuza. He transferred one of the three spears into his right hand, reared his hand back, and slung it forward. It caught the unsuspecting keeper in the upper thigh, dropping him to the ground. Hunter swung his right hand at the male's head, crashing his fist into the Yuza' face, knocking him to his back.
Here, though, Hunter made his first mistake. He assumed that the speared man was out of the fight, but no sooner had Hunter passed him to engage the last of the four Yuza, the injured man struggled to his feet … and removed his energy weapon from his waist. Would he get back into the fight before Gaia could act? And even if she did, would she be able to stop the man?
Ignorant to the danger behind him, Hunter engaged the fourth Yuza, first by throwing an ineffective spear at him, and then by stabbing the last one at the male's chest. The attack was successful to a degree; the stone point Gaia had lashed to the spear sunk into the Yuza, but it hit no vital organs. The keeper grasped the spear shaft with both hands and used his strength to keep Hunter at bay...
…just long enough for 3 more Yuza to emerge from the cave at the excitement.
