Just read A DISEASE IN THE PUBLIC MIND by Thomas Fleming. Its thesis is, New England and the South hated each other so much they used slavery as an excuse to try and kill each other. The red states and blue states are two distinct Americas that cant assimilate or cooperate or reconcile.
Fleming examines who and what mattered in America before the Civil War. I'm amazed at how little has changed over time. Fleming exposes all the secrets never found in the school books, some flattering, some not. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau were firm allies of abolitionist terrorist John Brown. The newspapers made shit up to push their political causes.
We still hate each other.
