Puerto Rico's new Governor demands statehood; US should cut it loose

President-elect Trump is simply a tool, a tool used to shut off what would've been a smooth, continuous slide down the socialist rabbit hole if Clinton had prevailed.

Other than that, I don't count his political philosophy (whatever that truly may be) any more significant than the blatant, NYC crony capitalist he's always unashamedly been. I really can't imagine his leadership being anything but subjective to serve his own, ingrained ideology, and his socialist son-in-law and daughter are a huge negative influence in that regard, and they definitely serve as a corrupt side dish to his own crony capitalism.

Trump is the tool whose historic success has given patriots a golden opportunity to virtuously right USS America's course themselves, knowing full well all the Trumps and McConnells and Ryans and McCains and Grahams in the world aren't going to help them in the hard work needed to replant individual liberty as the root from which all of this nation's political principles must sprout.

Trump is absolutely nothing - more so than any President-elect in history - without the base of People who elected him to where he will stand and swear to protect and defend the Constitution two weeks from now. Without that base of People, who I hope are the individual liberty-loving patriots I refer to, the corrupt federal government he is now set to lead will eat his lunch faster than a 3rd grader can say "pull my finger".

That base did as good as job as anyone could even imagine on November 8; if Trump ends up turning against them, he has absolutely no chance in 2020 to keep his seat at the top of the world (and with the humongous ego he seems to be, that's gotta be worth practically all the money in the world to him). If he ends up loyal to those who elected him, the People will still have the tool in their hands they wielded to politically rock this world so dramatically November 9.

If Trump, by some miracle, actually evolved in the next four years into a political American patriot who holds individual liberty for all as his highest presidential responsibility, then that miracle, upon the one known as November 8, 2016, might possibly mean even more political miracles are in store for America straight ahead - I sincerely hope so.

Yet, with or without Trump the tool as he is today, the grunt work is still the People's to do if history is to count them as up to the monumental job which still lays before them as American patriots.

LET FREEDOM RING!

No one ever asked that question of any other state, did they?

I don't give a shit.

What do they bring to the table?

Why should we admit them to the union??

If you can't make a half decent argument on why we should then the answer is clear.

What do they bring to the table?

Nice cuisine, similar to Cuban. Beautiful sun-bronzed bodies. Spectacular beaches in a climate even more tropical than Florida's. Resolution of their problematic status, and a permanently permanent American presence in the Caribbean.

Aside from a damn good place for tourism they bring terribly little to the table.

Again, I hope no one has any objection to the admission to the Union of a state that is Spanish-speaking and culturally Latin-Catholic -- and will be those things permanently. All the other states had a white English-speaking majority, or at least dominant element, before admission, but PR never will, it can't be settled/colonized that way, it's already full up.

There ya go.

I agree, but it could be brought up a few notches with investment and be a net positive.

But it's going to cause a lot of conflict too.

Sorry bigot, shit don't work that way...part of the union they will slowly but surely be bought into by white people just like HI was and they will have to start catering to the English speaking, evanglical population. Equality is a bitch ain't it?? :D

ACtually Hawaii is really hard to move into they have lots of rules about who can and cannot own land there. My last boss had spent the better part of a decade tangling through that.

PR would probably be different mind you and I think just getting them statehood would be a huge boon for them because their economy is kinda fucked on account of being kinda part of the US but kinda not.

All this excitement about Cuba becoming open to US citizens and you have pretty much your own Caribbean island resort. Thought your developers would have been all over that.

Since socialism didn't exist when the Constitution was adopted, it is unlikely the framers meant to ban it.

I see that New Year's resolution of becoming less dumb in 2017 is off to a poor start.

The world has never been without socialism, just had different names over the millennia.

India was a British colony for a long time . . . the people learned English as a language of wider communication, and still use it, but their old languages and culture survived nevertheless.

As for Hawaii, the majority of the population is Asian, and when their ancestors arrived they learned English, because why learn Hawaiian?

British say they were in India for two hundred years and all they got out of it was tea. Indians say the British were in India for two hundred years and all they got out of it was tea.

Okay maybe curry too. But I suspect that was brought in by immigrants.

Weren't in India long enough to take away their languages. A bit more of them than Welsh, Scots and Irish. Almost managed to wipe out Gaelic. Did a number on North American native languages though. Half a dozen may have enough survivors speaking them to not die out.

First thing to do is destroy the native language. Then they start to think like you and you're halfway towards assimilation.

I actually read all the way through this...

I'm thinking Puerto Rico would be well-advised to stay as they are... Of course, based upon the past fifteen years' performance, I have absolutely NO fucking clue why anyone without a mass of independent wealth would POSSIBLY entertain residency or citizenship.

From Chump to Pelosi, your leaders are, to all appearances, obsessed with "Rights of the Individual". Any deviation from that stance is deemed to be feckless idealism, or outright THEFT of "my" resources. "WE The People" my left arse-cheek!

Where I live may be cold, but I actually get rather a LOT of benefits from living here.

India is far far far more removed from western culture than PR considerably larger and older as well.

They join the union? In 100 years they won't be any more than another state dominated by the same chain stores and consumer culture you find everywhere else in the USA.

Socialist USA will shit all over them and force them to all make cakes for gay weddings....fuck those Catholic savages, we're going to civilize the shit out of em' with progress!!!

LOL...social Marxism....YOU..... will destroy everything Puerto Rican about Puerto Rico.

Capitalist Imperialist running dogs will do that.

They can.

Difference is capitalism is a voluntary agreement...social Marxism is by force of law.

If economics/government were sex, capitalism would be consensual, socialism would be rape.

Either they upgrade their act until they can merge in, or cut them loose all while keeping a naval base.

Free statehood? and they voted for it too? That is funny.

President George W. Bush granted Puerto Rico the rights to operate the former military possessions in Vieques, including Ft. Bundy, a portion of which was aboard Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. As a consequence of President Bush's decision, the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station became NAPR (Naval Activity Puerto Rico), where DoD Police provides security, but still is considered a military installation. On March 31, 2004, the station again became inoperative.
