The final message from the SS Florizel, a ship that ran aground on Feb. 23rd, 1918. Rescuers arrive on Feb. 24th, but for many it is too late. 98 died that day.

One of the local townspeople, Tom Kane, goes out in treacherous waters to the SS Florizel to look for any survivors. He is asked by one of the poorest of the townspeople to check for any clothing that has been left so he can help cloth his family. Tom gives him some clothing he finds. The man then finds $45 in a jacket pocket, but cannot bring himself to hold onto it and gives it to the neighborhood priest as a donation. The man - without money for food now - eventually starves to death.
