Movies!

John Wick
Big Hero 6 ( Loved it)
P.S. I Love You (the one chick flick I love)
The Outsiders
The Hobbit Movies

Finally finished Season 4 Game of Thrones! That little shit is DEAD! Yay!

:D

Well hello - how about a spoiler alert?? I'm not quite as far along as you are :(

I watched The Wedding Ringer. I liked it! This guy is going to get married, and instead of letting his bride to be know that he doesn't have any friends, he fabricates them, then needs people to step in and play the parts. It's not a fabulous movie, but it's great for a laugh when you just want a fun, brainless movie to relax to :)

Oh come on if you didn't know that already you don't spend much time in media.

I knew it at least a year ago and I've been anxious to see it!

That movie sounds fun!

The Hobbit movies, I don't love but merely tolerate. The Wick movie I haven't seen. The others were fun and Outsiders was good. Seeing so many pretty young men, back in the day was quite a treat too.

It's true. No time in media...
I just haven't been into TV in a while  and still haven't been able to get this to the top of my "gives a shit enough to sit and watch it" list :p

We just watched The Duke of Burgundy and it was so incredibly good! Perfect pairing with blue cheese, pear and red wine.

The description on IMDb doesn't tell you much anything, so don't be fooled by that. It's a heavily BDSM themed movie, a story about a relationship between two women, about how far you're willing to go to for love, about the roles of BDSM. Besides being an interesting story, it's also visually amazing, so very beautiful.

Easily one of the best BDSM themed movies I've seen. Definitely the best I've seen in the last 5 or so years.

Then I apologize. I didn't mean to spoiler with what I posted.

I recall seeing this recommended at FetLife by the film snobs group there. I'll have to wait for an appropriate weekend to watch it, as I watch such things alone, alas.

This Duke of Burgundy
Is that a chick flick ? Sounds interesting but I dislike chick flicks except 1

Isn't the fact that you think it sounds interesting a reason enough to check it out no matter what the genre is? :)

I've always found it funny people say that they think a book or a movie sounds interesting, but they don't want to read or watch it because it's not in the genre they usually enjoy.

But no, it's most definitely not a romantic comedy if that's what you mean by a chick flick. It is a chick flick in the sense that there are no men in the movie at all.

No men
It was already on my list, now it got moved to the top :p

Ida, the Polish movie that won the Best Foreign Film Oscar for 2014.

I don't know what to think of it. I expected a lot more from the story. Once you've seen the trailer, and if you know anything at all about the history of Poland, you know what the story is from start to finish. Still, it's an awesomely beautiful movie with every scene very well thought out, cinematographically. Some scenes were jarring, composition wise, but they too served a purpose. The movie is shot in black and white which I at first thought would make the experience kind of depressing, but in the end I thought it made it easier to appreciate the beautifully framed and composed scenes and lighting when.

The story is about an orphan woman, who's been raised in an abbey and is about to take her vows, when she's told that she has one living relative and she should visit her before taking her vows. The woman and the relative take a trip to find her past. Ie. a story that's been told a gazillion times in Polish literature and cinema in the past 20 years, with the exception of the main character being a nun instead of a "regular" person.

I'd still recommend watching this film. It's very beautiful, and especially if you haven't seen many Polish films with this theme the story is very moving. I still wish some other Polish films would make it popular internationally, not just the ones dealing with the second world war.

Sounds interesting. I've rarely, if ever watched a Polish film.

I did finally watch Lifetimes, Red Tent tonight. It was long a mini series. It seemed fairly faithful to the book.

And you have kicked me into gear! I am now 1/3 of the way into season 3.
I know! I know! But at least I'm getting there...!!

There are lots of good, famous movies from Poland, also ones that have nothing to do with war. They're mostly from the socialist era. Back then talking about the war or Jewish people was not ok, so now that they're finally dealing with that stuff these themes come up a lot.

I liked the book Red Tent a lot, so I'm looking forward to watching it at some point, too. Nice to hear it was faithful to the book. Did you like it?

I watched A Most Wanted Man. The movie was so-so. I liked the slow tempo of it, but the story seemed a little inane. What I hated was the weird, faked German accents. I was completely annoyed by them throughout the movie. Why not set it in the UK where the people could have spoken normally instead of making the stupid and completely implausible choice of having German people speaking English with (fake) German accents with each other in Germany. Why on earth would Günther and Dieter speak in English when they're having a private conversation?

Yes, yes, I get it that it's hard to get money for a movie that needs to be subtitled. Still, very frustrating. And yes, it's based on a book, but I still think they should have changed the country to allow the characters to speak English and be natural about it instead of this weird choice.

I liked parts of it. You know the book has some unpleasant things in it and it really focused on those more than the parts I liked I think.

Thank you for recommending this, we have just finished watching it. It was beautiful. And though I have no bdsm themed films with which to compare it it was a fascinating film about a relationship I thought, and agree it was beautiful, visually and emotionally ( and at times rather sad indeed).

I'm glad you liked it! :)

Another BDSM themed movie I can recommend is Going Under. The IMDb score is crap, but it's a good movie about the relationship between a man and a Dominatrix, or a man and his wife, or parents and their daughter. So basically it's a movie about relationships. :)

I thought I had written about it on this thread, but couldn't find it, so maybe it was on some other thread. I still remember the last scene of the movie, the solid calm and sadness of it, the postcards from the daughter, view of the lake. I liked it.

I've compiled a list of BDSM themed movies and documentaries, but I haven't updated it in ages. Probably time to get it up to date.

Bah, I've just checked, we cannot get that on amazon. ( our access to films is somewhat basic:eek:) I have a terrible memory but will ask G to make a note of it. Your recommendations are to be taken seriously :):rose:

I made a list of movies with bdsm/fetish theme on IMDb. I kept the list fairly mainstream, mainstream here meaning that most of them have an actual plot besides the sexual themes. Not all of them though. Some of them are more about the vibe than any actual bdsm'ing happening.

Good movies and bad movies, lots of bad movies actually, but some really good ones too. :) A couple of documentaries too.

I have lots more on my private list, especially of that less plotty persuasion, but I got bored adding them. I'll continue some other time.

Edit: they're not my recommendations, I'd only recommend some of them, but people have different taste in movies, so that's just a short list of what's out there.

We watched Babadook yesterday. What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than watching a horror movie featuring a mother?

It was pretty good. Not completely original, but not your broilerplate, pointless horror flick either. A movie with a message, sort of, doesn't require that much analysis to figure it out.

What kind of horror was it?

I dislike this new shaky cam and/or torture porn crap. I like suspense. As long as it wasn't all in someone's mind. Hate that stuff too.

I've been watching the TV show Lost Girl. My girl likes it because there is some girl on girl action.

No shaky cams and no torture excessive blood flying. It's categorized as psychological horror.

I don't really want to tell too much about it because I don't want to give away the whole plot of he movie. It's about a single mother whose husband died in a car crash when he was driving the woman to give birth to the son. The son starts to talk about a monster and finds a book called Mr. Babadook and soon Mr. Babadook starts to make an appearance in their life.

I thought the movie was quite beautiful visually, very minimalistic. I also liked it that it had a real story that told something about the world. I haven't seen many horror movies like that, but that's not my usual genre, so I'm sure there are others out there.

Here's the wiki link if you want to read more about the plot.

On another note, you mentioned on the book thread that you like books with the "everything's new" theme. Have you watched The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? It's about a woman who's been a part of a cult and kept underground, and when she's rescued she moves to NYC. It's really upbeat, surreally so, and has a great opening theme. :)
