TOKYO CITY

Year: 2055

The white and black enclosed motorcycle zoomed down the street gliding smoothly over the broken highway and cracked roads that were once pristine. The machine hummed its electric engine creating noise little more than a whisper as it zoomed down the streets and passed the refugee camps that now littered the broken war torn Tokyo City. Some stopped and starred as it passed talking amongst themselves as they watched with a mixture of envy, awe, and respect. Vehicles of any kind were rare nowadays which meant the person inside was high ranking or military.

Inside the canopy Hakurou sat. He was little more than a passenger to the fancy automated bike. His eyes didn’t watch the road instead starring up at the small TV and the news currently playing on the plasma screen.

“Today marks the two year anniversary of the battle of Tokyo City” A women said a large smile on her face that was far too happy for Hakurou. He tried his best to remain calm breathing in deeply as the women continued and images of the battle were shown.

“It was on this day today that the infamous Alpha Company detonated the Tokyo City nest and took the city back from our alien invaders!” The woman said practically gushing “The city has held since then with the Mecha Academy becoming the premiere academy training grounds for Mecha squadrons around the world! The head of the school Commander Varik is expected to make a speech today and the lone survivor of Alpha Company Captain Hakurou Fujimi is expected to arrive on campus. Hakurou has been recovering for the last two years and has not been seen. I know this reporter can’t wait to thank him in person!”

“Change channels” Hakurou barked his voice shaky. He felt his eyes burn and he half growled half sobbed as he furiously wiped away the tears. His hands trembled and his heart seized in his chest as he felt the beginning of a panic attack form. Even after two years they were still just as intense. The fancy army doctors said he would get past it and that time would eventually heal the jagged wounds on his phyce.

He had yet to see any evidence of that.

“Focus” He murmured closing his eyes and pressing his thumbs to his temple

“Stay present, stay present”

He felt the images coming bubbling from the deep black of his subconscious. The smells and sounds came first however. The smell of Napalm, the sterile clean of his cockpit, the screams of his sqaudmates and friends….

“I am Hakurou Fujimi” He said his tone firm as he pushed his thumbs into his temple focusing on the discomfort“I am Hakurou Fujimi the date is October 22nd 2055”

He repeated those facts repeated them as if they were a lifeline to his shattered mind. Slowly bit by bit the memories faded the smells and sounds replaced by the sharp leather scent from the motorbikes seats. He didn’t stop, not until he was sure the memories weren’t coming back.

“Please Welcome our special guest Riku Kojawski!”

His eyes snapped open the name connecting in his head. He sat up his eyes sweeping up and taking in the TV screen with renewed interest. He watched as the logo for the Tech Network faded out replaced instead with a picture of a kid no more than eighteen years of age. Fanfare began to play the picture morphing into a series of Mecha’s and different high tech projects.

“Riku Kojawski” A deep voice recited “A legend in the making”

Hakurou snorted at that but kept quiet as the voice over continued.

“His father Kaiju Kojawski delivered to us in our hour of need the next stage of warfare” The voice said as old stock footage of Mecha prototypes began to play.

“The mecha program our first and last line of defense, created to combat a threat that threatened all of us! He worked tirelessly doing everything in his power to give humanity the chance to survive”

The images changed morphing from the Mecha prototype videos to a striking image. A man in a hospital bed surrounded by different blue prints and notes. He frail hands still clutching the paper as a young teenage boy looked at him. Most people would think that the Teenager was sad, even looking at his father with a mixture of grief and sadness.

Hakurou however knew better

“His death was a shock to us all” A interviewed man said a scientist who boasted a long line of credentials.

“He was so passionate about the project” The man said tears springing to his eyes “We didn’t realize until it was too late that he was working himself to death!”

The man faded and once more the picture of the young man appeared. A montage of pictures followed showing the man working and directing people around skeletal frames and massive weaponry.

“Hope was at its lowest” The voice over said as if he was directing an epic tale
“Without Mr. Kowalski’s guidance how would the Mecha program be completed? Who would take control of the company in its hour of need?”

“He loves this bit” Hakurou murmured shaking his head from side to side contempt clear on his face.

“Still a young teenage boy Riku took control of his father’s company” The voice over said his tone triumphant “He finished the prototypes for the Mecha program and within six months of his father death they were rolling off of the assembly line!”

The picture changed once more. The Mecha’s were showcased here standing tall and proud behind Riku. Video of the Mecha’s in action began to play firing and destroying horde’s of the alien creatures known as abominations as action music played in the background.

It was enough to make Hakurou sick

“Turn it off” He said his tone short as the image went away.

“Max speed” Hakurou demanded his gray eyes stormy in the darkness as he leaned forward. He was suddenly to enclosed to confined to the motorcycle. The claustrophobic feeling sent a bolt of panic through his body and the back of his neck began to break out in a cold sweat as he urged the bike forward.

The city pressed in on him its large broken buildings threatening to tear into him like teeth. Was this the same corner where Akiko fell? He could see the stadium in the distance the same stadium where Ghost was buried under ten tons of rubble and his body was still unrecovered.

“Faster!” Hakurou snapped urging the bike on. He wanted…. No NEEDED to be out of the city. The ghosts of his fallen friends were around every corner each one taunting him blaming him for their deaths. Why did he get to live? they asked him their faces towering over him as he zipped through the city.

Why did he survive?

“I don’t know!” He shouted just as his bike burst out of the city. He cried burying his face in his hands as the bike continued oblivious to the pain his rider was going through.

He continued to cry the tears spilling from his eyes and down his chin. He buried his face in his hands his shoulders shaking. His grief over whelmed him taking over his mind and his heart and leaving him in the black of depression. He stopped fighting it curling into a ball instead.

“We’re here”

The computers artificial voice startled him temporarily taking him out of his grief. Here? Where was here?

The young 21-year-old pilot slowly uncurled his body stretching out. He rose rubbing the lingering wetness from his eyes as he took in the view.

The Tokyo bay stretched out before him its water glittering in the mid-morning sun. The Mecha academy was directly ahead built atop a strong rocky foundation that served as a mini island in the bay. Its high-tech facilities sparkled a beautiful merging of steel, glass, and high-tech equipment. A pair of Mecha flew overhead engaging in a mock aerial gunfight.

Hakurou watched the aerial fight his grief temporarily expunged as the pilot peeked through. The Academy used to be so much smaller! Nothing more than a training area and barracks when he and his friends had trained. Before he knew it, he was opening the door sliding out of the high-tech bike and breathing in the fresh scent of the sea.

The sea chased the lingering fear and panic out of his body. Reinvigorating him and causing a smile to break through across his face.

It was his first smile in over a year.

Hakurou noticed a group of kids beginning to come over to the motorcycle and quickly slipped away. Powered bikes like his were something of a rarity in Tokyo City. He knew how high school worked, knew it well enough that word would travel fast about the mysterious bike.

He slipped his white and black pilot jacket off reversing it to reveal the school blazer of Mecha Academy. He rubbed the ensign of the academy making sure the golden wings that denoted him as a senior were polished. Luckily, he was already wearing the pants part of the uniform which consisted of only long black pants with a single white stripe running down the middle.

He pushed his long black hair back running his fingers through it until it took on a messy spiked look. He spotted a set of books chilling on one of the tables and with no remorse took them as he stepped into the main grounds.

Hakurou took pleasure in remaining his anomality. It was the press and the press alone that gave him the title “Hero Of Tokyo City” Or “The lone Guardian”. Every interview the brass managed to pull him into consisted of him telling the reporter just exactly what had happened. When he spoke of bravery and commitment to duty it was his friends he spoke of not him. Eventually the interview request ended though he suspected that was more the Brass’s doing then the press not being interested.

He continued to walk touring the grounds and looking in on interest at the new improvements. He watched some of the teenagers assessing each of them with a critical eye.

He was watching a couple of pilots when they finally found him.

“Captain Hakurou?”

“Don’t know who you’re talking about” Hakurou answered turning to assess the rigid fresh-faced teenager in an immaculate Academy uniform.

The Young man faltered looking unsure for several moments. Hakurou raised an eyebrow letting the kid mentally try and figure out if he had gotten the name wrong before laughing.

“I suppose your hear to take me to the colonel?” Hakurou asked coughing to hide a chuckle as he walked over to him.

“Sir yes sir!” he said snapping of a perfect salute Hakurou suspected he practiced for just this occasion “First Ensign Hajira Okami reporting to escort you!”

“Hajira is it?” Hakurou asked watching him nod enthusiastically “Did you know you have something on your shirt?”

His words had the desired effect. The young man practically jumped out of his skin in shock. He began to pat himself pulling at his uniform and running a critical eye over it. Hakurou took advantage of the distraction slipping away and chuckling to himself as he walked the path down to the CIC and Academy offices.

The building was at the center of the academy and was one of the fews that showed no signs of being refurbished. The molted green two-story building stood out in stark contrast to all the gleaming white and glass. Two academy guards flanked the entrance wearing power suits and gripping plasma riffles.

“Identify yourself!” The guard on the right barked his gun slightly raised.

“Captain Hakurou Fujimi” Hakurou explained pulling out his ID card.

“He’s with me!” Hajira called panting as he rushed behind Hakurou “Here to see Colonel Arlington"

The guards nodded and after patting him down and letting him know the rules of the building they ushered him into the lobby. From there things moved quickly and before Hakurou knew it he was being brought into the Colonels office on the far side of the building.

Colonel Arlington was a large imposing English man. He wore the fatigues of the United Earth Army and had the kind of face that spoke of years of experience and military prowess. He was standing when Hakurou came in looking out the window at the grounds and the kids training.

“Sir”” Hakurou said as Hajira saluted and stood behind him.

“Pleasure to see you Captain” Arlington said returning Hajira’s salute “Your dismissed First Ensign close the door behind you”

“Sir” He said giving a curt nod and turning on his heel. He left closing the door behind him with a faint click.

“Where’d you find the errand boy?” Hakurou asked relaxing once he was gone “He needs to lighten up!”

“Hajira is a good man a top pilot even” Arlington said shaking his arm “He is a little stiff but I expect great things from him”

“If you say so” Hakurou said snorting “So why am I here? You can’t tell me it’s for the ceremony”

“That’s just a PR thing”” Arlington said with a wave of his hand “No its not why you’re here”

“I believe I can answer that”

Hakurou jumped having not realized there was a person directly behind him. He turned taking note of the slim man wearing a cheap black suit and white tie. His features were plain save for one droopy black moustache.

“A pleasure to meet you Hakurou” The man said coming out and holding out his hand “My name is John John Smith”

“Suuuuure” Hakurou said ignoring the hand and turning to Colonel Arlington “A spook?”

“Naval Intelligence actually” John Smith said coming over to stand by Arlington. “Spook is such a….. simple term for what we do”

“Mr. Smith and the earth army have a mission” Arlington explained “highly secret might just end this unforgiving war were losing”

“We are losing” John Smith interjected “Make no mistake of that Captain Fujimi Tokyo City was saved but three more have fallen since… America is nothing more than a Ghoul Wasteland at his point”

“Save the recruitment” Hakurou said raising his hand and turning to Arlington
“I’ve told you already I am NOT stepping in another Mecha not after Striker saved me”

Arlington sighed shaking his head from side to side.

“I’ve told you before and I’ll tell you again” Arlington insisted his term firm “Striker did NOT save you. You initiated a manual eject as part of a flight or fight response you were beside yourself with grief and hallucinated Strikers over ride Mecha do not have true AI!”

Hakurou shook his head his eyes angrily narrowing in on Arlington. They starred each other down for several seconds before Hakurou finally spoke.

“Are you ordering me into a Mecha sir?” Hakurou asked his tone firm.

Arlington sighed pinching the bridge of his nose.

“No” He finally said reluctantly “I'm ordering you to take three weeks and sort yourself then if you aren’t in a Mecha I will be forced to process you out of the academy and dishonorably discharge you”

Hakurou sighed opening his mouth to protest before he finally nodded.

“Sir” He said saluting the man before turning on his heel. He opened the door stepping outside to Hajira. The door clicked close behind him leaving the two adults alone.

“Do you think he will do it?” John Smith asked curiously.

“I don’t know” Arlington said pouring himself and John a drink “He was a kid when it happened and he lost everything that day”

“Do you think we can do it without him?”

Arlington turned starring once more out at the grounds and the sea before shaking his head.

“He’s the best damn pilot we have Mr. Smith”

“No I don’t”
…………………………..

“This is your new room!”

Hajira ushered him in his good mood having returned. He seemed to have forgiven Hakurou for the prank he played and now excitedly talked as Hakurou dumped his bag on the couch of his small suite.

“As a senior with celebrity status it was decided you would need your own room to stay in” Hajira said talking non stop as Hakurou disappeared into the kitchen.

“This room used to be an ambassador suite but has since been converted-“

“Hajira!” Hakurou said cutting him as he came back in with two soda’s “For the love of god man relax”

He put one of the soda down pushing it over to Hajira and cracking open his. He brought the fizzy drink up to his lips taking one long pull before leaning against his fridge.

“You don’t get out much do you Ensign?” Hakurou asked watching Hajira try to look casual as he picked up his drink.

“Uh…. Well no” Hajira admitted rubbing the back of his neck.

“But as the aide to the colonel I bet you know everything about this school”
Hakurou said moving forward.

“Like where the underground Mecha fights take place”
………………………………….

Hakurou stepped out onto the sand ignoring a protesting Hajira as he moved under the starry night sky.

“If you feel that strongly against it go back” Hakurou called to him rolling his eyes as he trudged along the sand.

“But I… Im supposed to be your escort!” Hajira whined causing Hakurou to roll his eyes.

“By all means then” Hakurou said gesturing with his hand “Escort me to the Mecha fights”
