"We talked about you and your family," Paulo began, smiling with amusement, "because my family, well, there isn't much to say."
That wasn't true in the least, of course. Paulo could talk about his family all day long without stop, and that was just about the bad stuff.
"We're from a little town near Rome," he began his lie. "Walla Springs. We served the Duke during the fight with Venice a few years ago. There's no one else. Family, I mean. Parents died of the fever. No other siblings. We sold our land, just a few acres. Since then, we've been traveling, spending our vast fortune."
As they reached a drop in the trail, Paulo descended and turned back to Carina. Without telling her what he was doing, Paulo reached up and took the beauty by the waist, lifted her, and swung her around to land on her feet before him. They were closer now than they had been, and while he should have released her, his hands remained on her hips as he looked down into her eyes with a smile.
