COVID-19 by the Numbers/Facts

969 deaths in Italy in the past 24 hours. That’ll be the US soon enough.

What about Italy and the US is similar?

Completely different cultures, fashion preferences, accents, and geographical shapes. Yes, the US has integrated certain elements of the Italian lifestyle (spaghetti, chest hair, illiteracy) but the two countries share little else in common outside of the Roman Catholic Church and organized gang violence.

However, the world is ready to help Italy recover and it will, it will.

Bless your heart. :)

99,116 infected, 1,526 deaths, in about an hour I suspect the US will be over the 100,000 mark. serious/critical though is still holding at 2463. Recovered is at 2465.

Their response, or lack thereof, to this pandemic. Of course the US response has been worse. Pretty sure the virus doesn’t care what you wear.

Pretty sure the virus doesn’t care what you wear.

Perhaps. But has anyone wearing lavender-colored thigh-high boots and Roman gladiator gear contracted the virus? No!

That is not just a coincidence.

You think we're going to hit 5500~ish deaths a day?

I doubt that, if only because death rates in Italy have been so much higher than they have been anywhere else.

But we'll probably be at 1000/day before much longer. For all the "is that all there is?" from some of our dumber posters, remember that the U.S. didn't have a single day with more than 10 total deaths from the virus until March 15. We went over 200 deaths/day on Tuesday, and today will probably top out at over 300.

Even if the number of deaths/day start taking a week to double — which would be a noticeable slowing from the current pace — that would put us at around 1000 per day by April 10 or so.

@pzf: BREAKING NEWS: Coronavirus cases in the United States reach over 100,000, the highest worldwide.

I do not believe you can compare countries by numbers of confirmed cases due to the amount of unconfirmed cases there are in various places. My sister her husband and their two daughters all have it but as Boris Johnson doesn't allow us to test they are not in the figures.

Here in Latvia (~2M people) as of 27.03.2020 17:20 there's 11,702 tests done (1089 today) confirming 280 infected (36 new today). So far only in 15 cases no clear infection chain had been found (to a person that had been abroad and/or is confirmed as infected). 21 person is hospitalized, none of them critical, reportedly. As of now one Latvian had died from covid-19 abroad, in London.

Then...

My sister her husband and their two daughters all have it but as Boris Johnson doesn't allow us to test they are not in the figures.

My sister too believes she had it. Their family, all seven of them, got something nasty in rapid succession early in the month. One of my nieces traveled to Austria in mid February, right at the start of the European outbreak, but I have reasons to doubt that's it, although theoretically possible. They're in self isolation in their country house since, working, teaching and learning online (including public high schools are fully online since last week), and are now recovering, the elderly husband's mother including. My brother-in-law got it worst and quite bad as far simple cold compares, but they didn't quite qualify nor wanted the hassle of going for the free tests, nor decided to spend for the private laboratory with is asking €80 per test (it's also said the queue there is over four days long now).

re Q: Why are things in Italy worsening by the day?

An additional -disputed- theory doing social media rounds, refers to notions like infectious dose (the amount of virus you're exposed to) and viral load(the total amount in one's body, nasal shedding included):

"1. For influenza, we know that that initial exposure to more viruses - or a higher infectious dose - appears to increase the chance of infection and illness.
Viral load in COVID-19 patients is highest at the beginning of their illness.
This could account for the fast-spreading nature of the pandemic.

2. Also: When it comes to COVID-19 - the viral load is higher in patients with more severe disease.

What does that mean in practice?
-- For example, if you are in a pub or another crowded space and a large number are infected with coronavirus but not showing symptoms, you will be breathing in a lot of respiratory droplets which are thought to spread the disease.
This will mean you will absorb a high viral load, which could be so great as to overrun your immune system and cause serious illness.
-- By contrast, if you sit with only one infected person, you would get a smaller viral load and your immune system will have a better chance of fighting off the virus."
