Have you ever gotten a scene stuck in your head? Either movie or book and it just stuck with you? Not only stuck with you, but you used it throughout your life, homing it to fit your situation?
Then as a writer you knew at some point, somewhere you had to use this scene, well your version and spin on it?
In my late teens I read a series called the Pliocene epic/saga? Julian May I think. Pretty good series, one of the few sci fi books I enjoyed.
In the first book there's an annual competition between two races that inhabit Earth at this time. There is scene where the biggest and baddest of the bad guys(okay eventually you end up seeing them as more the good guys, but they were bad in this one) is ready to fight.
These creatures were shape shifters and always took on some fearsome appearance, but this guy? He says screw that, he's scary enough as it is. The author describes it as the ground shaking beneath his feet and when he enters the circle he slams his staff on the ground and everything shakes and his opponent is in this oh shit mode as is everyone watching.
I don't know why but wow the visual hit me hard. So hard that I used it in my mind all the time. I spent years entering martial arts tournaments and would see myself as him. The unbeatable, unstoppable force of nature that no one had a chance against(this is actually called visioning it...um, did not always work)
I saw it in my dart leagues, especially in the title matches and one in particular I had to play the deciding game one on one against the person who was the best 301 player in the league(second best when I was done...worked better in darts)
Saw other book and movie characters in his place, saw it with some of my characters in my own mind, but never had that right scenario because after all this it has to be perfect.
Thirty years later....I penned the rough draft over the last couple of nights. The challenger for the covens leadership going up against its current mistress Abigail. Mathias Lefay, is legendary. He's big, he's powerful, he's sadistic and he wields an ancient staff that no other coven member has been able to wield in several centuries.
An entire coven of bad ass witches(both male and female) fear him. They bow there heads when he walks past and their in awe of his power without the staff. The staff he slams into the ground once he enters the circle of truth and causes the ground to erupt around him....
I built it up differently and changed enough to make the scene my own, especially his posing and posturing beforehand and his nasty jibes and threats, but I felt I finally put that creative ace I've held up my sleeve since I was teen into play.
Has this happened for anyone else?
