Darkened eyes, skies
Cloudy with irreconcilable
Sadness
But it's always Halloween
And it wears a cloak of
Indifference
Like a child, believing
Their disguise fools
All the grown-ups
But like hiding in cellophane
The naked truth
Is clear for all to see.

zombie-boy's narrow bony face
felt smooth and cold but
not like the casing of a bullet
something more akin to
a gourd i might've plucked
from a late autumn patch
shivers imperious and wanton
bubbled down the ridges of
backbone as a hard angled jaw
pressed against soft windpipe
breathless, nearly, but uttering
were you not already dead
you would be, come sunrise
.

Blending in with
trees, silhouetted as
Shadows grow long
the branches that sway
Hide his ever-moving arms
a blank oval sitting
Atop the black collar
mimics a low moon
It's the only telltale
thing you may notice
Or not
you might never even
Feel the black arms
slide over shoulders,
Around ankles,
until you're hugged
Against a cold legend
who is very hungry.

Your diamond eyes sparkle
Beware my diamond back
The smooth concertina and
Lateral undulation seems
To create a glowing aura
Drawing you in too close
Then the hooks dig in
For a moment the ecstasy
Crushes any fear but
All too soon the fangs
Sink in, toxins burning
Ruin you forever

Raised veins lead to
The Ruby City
A treasure map of tissue
To follow with a fingertip
Or tongue, maybe
Creating a thin warm path
Leading to the chest
Nails like small shovels dig
To expose that quiet heart
No jewels found there
Only a lump that is
Black as coal.

each segment, each
broken piece arranged
into a temporary living
circus sculpture
the filthy and dull
utensils making agony
last impossibly long
every minute ticking by
more shocking and
grotesque
a completely unlikable
disgusting ring leader
frames filled with
blood and excrement
and finally death
it was every thing i
hoped for and more
that i didn't expect.

the glass cracked
the tiny fissure spiderwebs
and splits reflections
into puzzle pieces
joining them at points
ill fitting, with glue
or tape as if using
a bandaid to fix
a shattered soul.

tick
tick ticks
against the four walls
or headfirst in my skin
both equal in slowly
shortening the length
of life and sin

when my own name appeared
in the obits of the paper today
reality was questioned and
at last i understood
what an illusion, a dream
the life i knew really was.

Autumn

is the decrescendo, the dial-back,
the slow plod through to solstice
and on into Winter’s dull and scratchy dirge
where all the instruments are packed
away, save one muffled violin

16

reservoir teaming with
colorful ideas
mostly concerning
thoughts vile and
unspeakable yet
i say them, anyway.

the stink of dead flowers
is a ineffective cover up
and it is easy to smell
those who once lived in
my heart.

Hey, readers. I did write something here, but I have already removed it, because, well, I'd like to do something else with it. You may not believe me, which is your prerogative. Have at me, if that is your opinion.

I just think I might want to do other things with this poem than get it permanently stamped into various search engines.

Have a swellish day, y'all.

Michael and Jason can't compare
A man in black with an evil stare
Even gives Freddy a serious scare
This guy is nothing but mean

With blacked eyes and inky skin
His presence draws the Ghoulscouts in
On stage exploits of rock n' sin
He's the reason for the screams

Guttural growls and howling guitars
This is our Freakshow with the Stars
This night will end in new bruises and scars
It's time for Wednesday 13!

In October,

flower beds are a battlefield.
Each day I carry away the dead,

starved of sun, bodies left to rot.
Squirrels pick at the still corpses for food.

These few petunias still vibrant on the hedge,
I rip up, like a thunk on the ‘ead.

Zombie Poem

I want to march with the dead
to nowhere, to anywhere, toward human flesh
like a college boy on a weekend

where the game is out of town
and the next calculus test is a week from Monday.
A place toward which I can without purpose

plod except for the overriding hunger
that drives me on, that need
to consume another living body.

A little wine, a little song, some heartache and, God—
she opens herself on my thin bed.
The projectionist fumbles the following reel.

Cue the undead.

crunching brittle bones like
breakfast cereal, the dead
seek out their own kind
in an audacious display of
cannibalism-
the chewy bloodless
innards are gulped whole
and tendons caught
between the teeth that remain
remains of this annihilated
graveyard resemble some
ghostly war where there
were no survivors
only bits of cloth or jewelry
it's a zom-eat-zom world.

the silver point makes a
ting, ting as you tap it
against my belt, unbuckled
held lovingly, tightly
in the arms of bondage
and all that can happen
within are fear or trust
or prayer- i'm not there,
yet-until a trickle is felt,
or red runs and smears
i won't believe you can.

The first girl I loved threw me
back into the stream
like an undersized trout

where I settled into a slow, deep eddy
and wept salt into the cold,
fresh water.

In time, I ran out of tears and tracked
gnats and flies,
for I was still hungry. I grew

fat and wily, sure
of her whom I chose to strike,
yet always wary of too shiny lures.

love this, specially the first two verses. the title, though, leaves me bemused - can you make it link up for me as i am floundering
