Breaking news.

1.00 am england time.

The table, the chair, the 'puter and the house just shook.

We're having big winds here at present, last night we were getting momentary power dips tonight it's earthquakes.

This is only the second I've experienced so I may be completely wrong but from my memory of the Wales quake (which we felt in Yorkshire) it felt very similar.

Any other Brits get shook up?

I've been in a few....slight and major whilst living in California...

However... Earth Quakes in Britain are rather rare arent they? Are you sure it wasnt thunder??? Not that I doubt you but sometimes thunder sounds and feels just like an earthquake.....

Nothing on the internet so far. The last quake you got was that 2007 Kent quake. 4.3 and before that the Dudley 2002 quake 4.8, and, may I say as a Californian those numbers are quite respectable

LONDON — A 4.7 earthquake was felt across much of England early Wednesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on their Web site.

Sky News received calls from people in Norfolk, Leicestershire, Bedfordshire and East Anglia areas of the country.

Looks like your memory is spot on :D
Hope nobody got hurt.

Oh, well if it was only 4.7....

:D Really, everyone okay? That kind of hit can easily bring down brick chimneys and I know there are a lot of brick chimneys in England. Not to mention send things flying off open shelves.

Holy Crackers... thats a respectable jolt...

been in em from 3.0 all the way up to the big loma prieta quake (7.1) in downtown san francisco in 1989....

All is well I presume?

Sky news says it's in Scotland but felt everywhere.

"The epicentre of the expected earthquake is said to have been Kingston upon Hull, 15 miles north from Lincoln."

No injuries or damage reported so far.

Since when has Hull been in Scotland? (About par for Sky news I guess ;) )

Epicentre would be about 60 miles or so south of here, & we felt the building shake, but no damage that I could see & the lights didn't even flicker. Odd that it seems to have been felt more strongly south of the epicantre than north of it (or those to the south are just quicker to report things!).

Depends on the underlying stucture of the earth - it may have followed a type of rock seam or something.

The 5.5 that did a good job of flattening parts of Newcastle (the Aussie one) seemed to do that. Some parts of the city were profoundly damaged, others less than a mile away were not.

I'll take the blame for the Scotland goof, read the map wrong. Latest says Market Rasen and still no reports of damage or injury. Why do I think damage will show up with daylight

If you live near a nuclear plant, now would be the time to move. :D

Slut gut...*drool*

Hubs sent me this link:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7266136.stm

I was fast asleep and was woken by it, my bed was shaking, everything was banging about and I was totally disorientated. Hubs came up and reported his sofa shaking and we both assumed it was an earthquake. My daughter didn't wake up and there didn't seem to be anyone out in the streets.

Very weird!

The Loma Prieta Quake was centered in Loma Prieta, near Santa Cruz. It did a lot of damage to downtown SF, and other places too, including knocking down part of the Bay Bridge.

I was in San Jose at the time, walking to my car. I actually felt the earth moving under my feet, the only time that has ever happened to me, despite all the quakes I have felt. I think that was the only time the World Series was ever delayed by an earthquake.
