SeaCat started a fun thread on the worst movie you've seen. What are some of the best "small" movies you've seen. Not blockbusters or heavily promoted ones, but ones that go under the radar for the most part that you thought were excellent.

Some recent ones I saw are:

Hard Candy
Domino
A Very Long Engagement
The Notebook
Brick
Mini's First Time
The Descent (marketed some but awesome if you like this type of horror movie)
Dog Soldiers (ditto the Descent)

Your right, definately on the list. I forgot about that one.

But I'm a cheerleader
Grandma's boy

I love campy movies though.

hmm, How small?

The smallest film that I know of that I really like, is "Blood Tea And Red String" very cool little one-woman animation piece.

Other than that- "Arizona Dream" by Emir Kusturica is kind of an unknown gem. Johnny Depp plays Jerry Lewis' nephew. They are amazing together.

and in the Depp field, "Dead Man"by Jim Jarmusch is probably bigger than a small film, but- damn!

"Billy Elliot" is a sleeper, about a boy in a welsh coalmine town who wants to dance ballet. The kid, Jamie Bell, is an amazing body actor.

"Simply Irresistible" was a nice little chick flick from around 1999

I thought you said under the radar. When that movie was in the theatres, I thought it was promoted literally everywhere.

Damn good movie though. :)

Anyway, unless those too are too known, I'd like to add to the list:

Cecil B Demeted
The Machinist
Chain Of Fools
Smoke

Dark City. If you've never seen this and like sci-fi, go find it now. :)

I love Dark City, and it was the first DVD that I ever bought (I have around 400 right now :D )

I wasn't aware it was a small film though. I know it wasn't a blockbuster, but I thought it had marginal box office success.

Kudos to you for seeing and owning. :) I chose it based on cult status. I know around here it was not at the box office long and it wasn't as advertised as your summer blockbusters/oscar contenders are.

on that note "Can you tell me how to get to shell beach?"

I don't get it.
I seen it the other day and wasn't at all impressed.

Boondock Saints! Not advertized AT ALL in my area (and I live outside NYC, you'd think I would have heard about it). It's the best action movie I never heard about until it was on DVD for about a year.

I love Depp, I'll have to check them out. I really enjoyed Billy Elliot. I'm glad you mentioned it.

I haven't and will. Back at you with Pitch Black, starring Vin Deisel

Oops. My bad on A Very Long Engagement. That's odd, I don't remember seeing the ads.

Great movies.

Yes, I can't wait to see what he does next.

Never heard of it. I'll check it out.

It's worth it just for Millum Defoe's performance, and he isn't even the main character. From start to finish I find it to be brilliant and realistic, which is bizzarre for an action flick.

Just wanted to thank you all for responding. I was hoping to get some good recommendations on movies and it looks like I have. I hope you have too.

Thought of another enjoyable one. Serenity - based on the Sci Fi Networks series.
