A Political Board

At the moment the GB is having a vote on whether to establish a Politics Board. AH members often complain about political threads so why not step over there and vote yourselves. The vote is currently very close so it would only take a few AH members to tip the vote decisively one way or the other.

A vote in favour of a politics Board would probably tend to make political threads on the AH very unlikely in future.

If I lived in the USA, I might well have my say.
But being nowhere near it, I'll let the residents do it, but thanks for the heads-up.

Point noted HP, but if this change goes through, under the proposed guidelines, any political thread on the AH would be moved to the new Board thus moderating and affecting the content of the AH. For good or bad depends on your view.

As to your second point whilst most political threads are concerned with the US they are not exclusively so.

I must admit the mischief maker in me sees the appeal of a very small minority swinging the vote one way or the other as it is currently very close.:)

If an Authors' Hangout regular who doesn't post on the General Board were to vote on the proposal - I would consider that vote as invalid as the numerous alts who appear to be voting now.

The proposal is about the General Board, not the Authors' Hangout. At present we don't have the abusive ranting that some GB people think is rational argument. NOTE that Laurel is suggesting a separate forum within the General Board.

There would be no reason to move a 'political' thread from the Authors' Hangout unless it was as abusive as some of those on the GB. If necessary there could be another sub-forum within the AH, as was suggested some time ago.

Laurel's post at the start of the poll thread on the GB:

A proposal has been submitted. It is as follows:

The creation of a separate forum within the General Board specifically for political issues.

Forum Title: Politics Board

One line opener (under the title): Step inside to post about politics, politicians, and the government.

Workable Definition in a Sticky:

This Politics Board is your political home. Post on anything concerning:

1. The government. Of any country, on any level. Its structure, legal documents, laws, proposed laws, including interpretation and implementation thereof.

2. Politicians. Current government office holders; those that are or may seek election or appointment to any government position; those that have held those positions; their staff and volunteers; and lobbyists thereto.

3. Political theory or agenda. Includes political party platforms.

I post here and there on the GB and will vote.

But being this, like the GB, is an un-moderated forum who will move the thread if someone here posts it? They going to move the "Marijuana majority" thread?

But as for the AH...its not just the occasional political thread here its about the countless "Hey, this is cool" news articles that get posted here that have nothing to do with writing and should be over in the GB Those threads tend to lead to as many arguments here as political threads do over there.

I guess my point is...who's going to enforce anything? The GB is laurel's baby so she will make sure all the Political threads get moved, but over here? Good luck with that

We don't need a forum section war. For the most part, they stayed out of our discussion of this years back, so I say stay out of theirs.

Lovecraft. There is no requirement for threads on the AH to be necessarily concerned with writing at all, or indeed only with writers. It is a place for " readers and writers to socialise and discuss the craft of writing." (my emphases.)

So far as arguments are concerned, it's my observation that the majority arise between a limited number of particular individuals playing out their long standing mutual animosities. They have little relation to thread content.

Og is technically right that the proposed politics forum is a sub forum of the GB but it's possibly a fraction naive to think it won't affect the AH. Once it's there, if say Lovecraft for example saw a blatantly political thread on the AH he could suggest it belonged elsewhere. I think that proposal would have a sympathetic hearing because Laurel has moved threads from one forum to another in the past, - it will happen again.

Three Posts in one day - that must be a record for me - better take a break.

I believe the poll is anonymous....unless you post your thoughts there.

What the site seriously needs is no more un-moderated forums and mods that will act by the rules of the site not personal vendettas and bias.

The harassment that goes on in some of the forums would be quick to end if the same offenders were getting their accounts blown up every other day.

No, it's a public poll. I've been watching it. I was curious whether they'd have the triumphant return of members years absent to cast a "No" vote, only to have that member vanish once again immediately after :p

You mean like what has happened on the last few things we've voted on over here.

For fear, I rarely dabble in the GB but can't see the point in separating out politics from the general ranting.

I would be very sorry if the AH were affected in any way. The forum seems to have degenerated into what LC calls a 'have you seen this article' blandness and an excess of party games (yes, I play too). Since the likes of Colleen Thomas, Cloudy, Stella Omega and Amicus, there is little stimulating discussion.

Trysail, where are you?

Thank you for the heads-up! I'll happily vote for a new section for troll housing. There are some interesting threads (once in a blue moon) on the GB, but they're swamped by all of the political crap.

Trysail....all he talks about is politics which is why he rarely posts here

Actually, he doesn't talk much himself at all. He mostly cuts and pastes illegally. And on stuff that makes it seem that he took a wrong turn somewhere in clicking on discussion boards.

As usual, the AH's resident hypocrite and troglodyte doesn't have the foggiest idea in hell what the fuck it's talking about.

If it was any dumber, it'd be a plant.

Moving a blatant political thread to a new forum would be easy.

But what is going to happen is a thread about...say movies will start and they will hijack with politicsl comments. The gb has no mod and I doubt laurel is going to spend her time policing every thread.

Its a good idea but I don't see it being easily enforced.

I went over to the General Board in search of this poll but couldn't find it. I did find a few discussion threads about it amongst the general screeds that reminded me why I haven't visited that area since I joined Lit.

Is there a link to this poll? Or is it over, or withdrawn?

It has dropped to page 4 (no comment needed on the probable realization that administration talk about new forums is just that).
