The whole atmosphere at Sweet Oleander had changed. The looks that Remo gave her were a little more lecherous.
Her first song was "Body and Soul", and somehow the words made her almost cry. Here she was tied to a man that she hated, a man that abused her, solely to keep her sister from being used as a prostitute. And yet, there was a man that, if fate had not been so cruel, she might have stood a chance with. Not to be.
My days have grown so lonely
For you I cry, for you dear only
Why haven't you seen it
I'm all for you body and soul
I spend my days in longin'
I'm wondering why it's me you're wronging
I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul
I can't believe it
It's hard to conceive it
That you'd throw away romance
Are you pretending
It looks like the ending
Unless I can have one more chance to prove, dear
My life a hell you're making
You know I'm yours for just the taking
I'd gladly surrender
Myself to you body and soul
What lies before me
A future that's stormy
A winter that's gray and cold
Unless there's magic the end will be tragic
And echo a tale that's been told so often
My life revolves about you
What earthly good am I without you
Oh I tell you I mean it
I'm all for you body and soul
As usual, between her first and second set, she headed upstairs. The gunsel ogled her a bit as she walked up the steps. Before, he never would have done that, and the change worried her. Something bad was happening. She could feel the hairs on the back of her neck rising and the lump in the pit of her stomach grew larger.
Damian had never been warm but tonight it was like Antartica in his office. He was not on the corner of his desk, but instead sat behind it busily writing. He didn't even look up at her as he spoke.
"I'm gonna be late tonight. Have some business to attend to."
"Then I'd like to visit her."
"No." He didn't even look up at her.
"Why can't I see my sister? I'm willing to pay the price." There was worry in her voice.
He spoke slowly and quietly, enunciating each syllable clearly. "Because I said no." She hesitated for a moment, just long enough for his head to lift from his attention to his writing to give her a cold stare. A chill ran through her as he spoke. "I believe that you are needed on stage."
She closed her eyes and took a breath before turning to leave the office. She didn't look back but she could feel the gunsel's eyes on her as she walked down the stairs. The new dresser stood in the wings, ready to comb any of Destiny's wayward tresses. Destiny worried about Rosy. She had tried to protect the girl and had not done a good job at it. And now, what about her sister? Why would he not let her see Olivia?
In the dark she stepped out and began to sing.
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.
Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song
Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.
As soon as she was off stage, Remo was there, grabbing her arm to drag her out to the car. He was none too gentle as he dumped her in the back seat, throwing her purse into her lap before crossing around to get behind the wheel.
No words were exchanged and soon she was being escorted into the lift and up to the penthouse. Something told her to run. But there was no chance for escape and she watched as Remo unlocked the door and waited for her to cross the threshold before locking her in.
She suddenly felt old and used. Worthless. She had been unable to protect either girl and now...what? She crossed the living room to look out the window at the city below. The gay lights hid the evil that lurked below. Evil that she had been forced to bed with. Evil that may kill her by the end of the night. The window was cool against her cheek.
"I'm so sorry that I failed you." She whispered a prayer to Olivia and Rosy. Briefly it occurred to her to jump and perhaps disappoint Damian. But that wasn't her way.
Turning to her left to head to the bedroom, she didn't bother to switch on the lights. She stood in the middle of the bedroom and unzipped her dress. Gravity took hold as it slid over her hips to puddle on the floor. Bending over to pick it up, she heard his voice and she quickly straightened up, whirling around with the silky dress clutched to her breast, a frail shield between the intruder and her nudity.
"What are you doing here? How did you get in?"
