Hysterically Stupid Statements

In a coffee shop yesterday, a lady was complaining about foreigners coming to the USA and not learning English. Then she dropped this linguistic bomb:

"English is the Lingua Franca of the world."

Merde!

Do you know what a Lingua Franca is? It's probably not the most ACCURATE of statements but calling it hysterically stupid is an incredible reach.

It has come to mean a more formal kind of Pidgin language, but the etymology of the phrase is what makes it staggering.

Oh, and yes, I do know what it means.

It's almost as if it were my native lingua franca. 8)

Could she have been saying "hole breast", and you just heard it as "whole"? 8)

That makes zero sense. A lingua franca is a bridge language. A "native bridge language" is an oxymoron.
