Silly Question: Hospital Attire?

I am, for the record, knocking on wood at practically every turn as I write this. I sincerely count myself lucky to genuinely not know the answer here.

Hospital patients (US) still generally have to wear those gowns that only cover the front and are tied off in the back, right? Are you allowed to wear panties/underwear? This is, of course, in the case of someone who doesn't need tubing put in for the bathroom needs...
 
It would depend on why you were there, of course, but yes, generally you could wear underwear.

It's not a silly question at all. I have no problem with patients wearing undergarments, but it really depends on how sick they are. If an awake, alert, orientated stable patient wants to wear pajama bottoms, I'd be alright with it. If a confused, combative, alcoholic in DTs is demanding to put his/her clothes on...no.

It's all situation appropriate.

The last time I was in the hospital I wore nothing but a pair of gym shorts and got to meet every nurse on the floor.
