Among deer, the males and the females only come together during the rutting season. The rest of the year, the bucks wander alone, the does and foals in small groups. There is nothing we could call a society even at the wolf-pack level.
I have read a theory -- can't find a reference right now -- that it was the same way with our very distant ancestors, but at some point the females evolved to be in season all the time, giving the males an incentive to hang around all the time and protect and provide for the females and young -- an obvious survival advantage, and incidentally a necessary precondition for human civilization.
So if you ever wondered why humans appear to be so horny all the time compared to most other vertebrates, there may be a very good evolutionary-biological reason.
So don't feel guilty about it.
As if you would.
