Keroin - in the bolded part, did you mean to say your friend actually lies at times? I'm assuming no, but want to give you a chance to clarify.

I've always heard "crying wolf" used as a metaphor for lying for personal advantage. (From the fable in which the 1st two times the shepherd calls out to the villagers, he does so just because he thinks it's funny to watch them come running.)

There is a phrase in the US - "playing the race card" - that is similar, though more specific. (Apologies if you already knew this.) What it means is: claiming to be a victim of racism, solely to gain some personal advantage. In the wake of the Crowley incident, unscrupulous rightwingers have been hurling this accusation at both Professor Gates and President Obama.

Thanks for that! Yes, my analogy was a bit misleading. I meant that she thought there was racism where there was none. That's all.

I was at dinner tonight with a small group of friends. While we were talking about the Crowley/Gates incident, one of the women was more adamant than everyone else in criticizing the officer's failure to acknowledge why the professor responded the way he did. In explaining her position, she relayed a story about a time when she accidentally left her credit card on a department store counter, while doing some Christmas shopping late at night.

Walking across the nearly-deserted parking lot, she was approached by a male, running behind her. She whipped around, froze in fear as he came nearer, and then regained her composure enough to rake her keys across his face, drawing blood. Both she, and the guy, started screaming.

"GET AWAY FROM ME, YOU BASTARD!"

"YOU FUCKING BITCH! LOOK WHAT YOU DID!"

Mutual screaming continued, until people from inside the store ran out to intervene. Turns out, the guy was running to return the credit card she had forgotten - an actual good Samaritan type. Even after she understood this, she kept yelling at him. Finally, the guy regained his composure enough to speak more calmly, though he was still livid.

"Lady. I was trying to help you. Why the hell did you attack me like that? Do I look like a rapist to you?"

"Mister. In a deserted parking lot at night, all men look like rapists to me. Especially the ones who come running."

Have no idea why anyone hates you, though it is wise to remember no-one is liked by everyone ( for example, can you honestly say there is not one person on the planet you do not like?) and to try and be someone who is soon makes you a slave to everyone and their whims, and no longer capable of being yourself or sincere. In writing, the best writers tend to write from the heart and for themselves, not try to adapt a plot to just please others and definitely recognise they are not able to write a story which will work for everyone...and most have a character which is strong and not prone to disquiet over those who do not appreciate their product as not everyone is going to. There are always going to be people who take such things personally and make them personal, and some of those may be out of jealousy, not actual dislike of what you write, though they may disguise it well. You need to step back, become strong enough to accept not everyone will like you and/or what you write, and be positive about those who do like you and what you write, and then write for you and what works for you...the rest should follow.

Oh dear, I should have read further than your first post before posting what I did above....now I can begin to guess at why people hate you so much and it probably has nothing to do with what you write (I haven't read it and am not interested in doing so), though that also likely reflects the dysfunctional character behind the writing and sets people off.
