.....After Further Review.....

I think a more productive solution would be for the Mod to step in and somehow stop the action without deleting all of the posts and content.

It could be a great learning experience for everyone and future posters, but not if they just disappear.

Unfortunately, unless we get teams of moderators to cover the boards 24 hours a day, that is often not feasible.

that's a scary place over there if suspicion of intent, accompanied by no truly objective proof of it, can get a thread yanked. yowzers. there's no way to rebut a claim that you violated the forum rules, if that is the case.

Oh yeah, I understand that it's not practical or possible. I meant even after the action stopped, Mod edited or annotated posts could have been there to show the control of the board and the progression of the disagreement.

The way it stands now, new posters won't know and others might learn that flaming is fine because it will all be deleted. That's dangerous.

Come on, people, give Lady G a break! She's doing her job, which is thankless, and is being treated in a mean spirited way. She can't watch every thread 24/7. People need to moderate themselves within the guidelines, and, if they can't, they should expect to have their posts deleted.

The how-to forum was set up with moderation. You can expect that something like that will be dumped, especially as it's so new and the parameters have to be set.

The guy was out of line, bad kitty responded. He remained out of line. I don't think he would talk to his grandmother or his pastor that way.

Around here we get into these things, and because we aren't moderated, they stay.

My understanding is that the HT Cafe is going to be different. So, people like the Zhuk need to grow up and act like the adult he professes to be.

I agree with this and I didn't single out anyone in particular. I consider a 'moderator' to do just that. I think their role is to act as a stabilizing force to provide balance and safety.

Nothing will be learned from all of this, as it is, except that flaming will be deleted. When the same thing happens again, there's nothing to point to as a precedent.

That's a very good point. In the few instances when I have had to edit posts in the GLBT, I have usually left a note in the post explaining why it was edited.

I agree, Lady G is in a very tough situation. It does seem that some of the more vocal posters in the How To are taking the position that moderation should be applied to everyone but themselves. They chafed under her moderating, and how expect her to use a heavy hand with those posters they don't want to welcome into their space.

She's in an unenviable position, and I don't have any doubt that she is trying her best to do things in a way that makes as many people happy as possible.

I'm not attacking any of the Moderators either. That has to be a tough job, with little thanks and scarce appreciation.

I'm glad others volunteer for that sort of thing. I just think the process might be tweakable.

Q, when you move the post, do you leave the name of the person who posted?

I think that's rather important, too. That way we can brand a great big T on the forehead so everyone knows them for the troll they are!;)

I've never removed an individual post, only edited and left a note. And I don't think I've done that more than a half dozen times.

What I do more often is move threads from the GLBT to GLBT Personals, and when I do that, I always leave a redirect.

Ah, so the perpetrator is branded...Cool.

We like branding.

Beyond that, I wanted to say that was a great thread you all had in progress. It was very informative and blended personal experiences with varied perspectives.

It was helpful and thought provoking.

This deserves quoting.

The problem is that there are no objective criteria for what is okay and what isn't.

Anyone seen wonder boy yet? He better show up soon as I have to be off to bed. My 4 yr old kept me up til 4am puking, and the 2 &1 yr olds woke me up at 6.
