:p Just thinking here...
Has anyone ever tried Vanilla Coke with vanilla ice cream? Mmmm, that's good stuff!
OK, so it's not as good as the lime sodas I used t'get at that old soda shoppe in Arlington Hts, IL but this is still pretty, darned good...!

To me, vanilla coke smells exactly like WD-40 penetrating oil. And I mean exactly. I can't believe they put it on the market.

Then can I assume, dr M, that you've not tried it? You don't know what you're missing, my friend! It needs the vanilla ice cream to deaden the taste of the petroleum, I guess.

It's aftertaste always reminded me of alcohol. Namely the aftertaste of a weak whisky-coke.

That's just me though. I'm aloof. I can see a vanilla coke/vanilla ice cream combo being pretty good.

Anyone try the lime diet coke yet? If so, is it any good? I always figured it would be a good tequila chaser.

"LIME COKE?" I've been dyin' t' try that stuff, too! The only problem with it is they only sell it in the "un-leaded" (read: Diet) variety, here! I can't stand the aftertaste of those artificial sweeteners!
"Neutrasweet?" That stuff's evil!
Why don't they start using "stevia" root? That stuff's all-natural, with zero side-effects and no bad things, like cancer-causing, icky-ness found in neutra-sweet!
I would drink Diet Coke if it were made w/ stevia!!!

I've tried V-coke, but not with ice cream. I could see how that might work out, though. In the cola wars, I'm a devoted Coke man (Pepsi tastes like flat coke to me), but I really had my confidence shaken by the "Coke II" fiasco. I mean, how could they? So I looked a bit askance at this vanilla coke thing.

Personally, the ne plus ultra during my soda fountain days was the chocolate coke. The amateurs went for cherry cokes. The hard core coke-a-holics went for the chocolate. Wouldn't that have made more sense than vanilla?

"CHOCOLATE COKE?"
Hmmmmm.... Now THERE'S an idea who's time has come!
I can't say that I've ever tried it but, boy, it sure sounds tasty!

And I remember the damned Coke "conversion," too! I still have NO idea WHY the hell they did that! It pissed me off... BIG time! I remember all the network news shows, late at night, talking about it, too... CBS did a taste comparison and said that RC Cola was the closest to "old Coke!" (I think they use real, cane sugar, rather than the icky corn-sweeteners!) Or, how about "JOLT" Cola? They use the good stuff in there? (I think they also use Ridalyn, but it may just be the added caffeine. I might be wrong.)

Anyway, I have a bottle of the "old Coke," still! I wonder if it's worth anything?

Maybe I'll save it and sell it to a collector, someday. I'll bet I could get a pretty penny for it... (it'd only be a penny but it'd be pretty pretty, I should think.) :D

We drink the lemon stuff at our house ... for some reason, nobody else we know likes it, but we both love it. Even mix our own at fast-food places, a shot of lemonade into the soda. ;)

Is there Lemon Coke? I know there's Pepsi Twist, and it's okay (I'll try it on occassion when I don't know what I want). It just tastes a little too off to make it a fix.

The problem with these variants: They don't offer them at resturants. In the event you do become hooked on it, you can't always get your fix. (My freind is a Pepsi One addict. He always asks for it, and is always disappointed when they don't have it).

I remember being in Paris in my wild youth, and ordering coke in the cafes. They always brought it with a wedge of lemon, and they were right. The citrus cuts some of the sugar's stickiness and makes it very refreshing. Now that I'm a bit older (ahem), I find that lemon helps hide the chemical taste of diet cola too.

Of course, the best diet cola is still Diet Rite for my money. It's actually drinkable.

bbkradwell: I'm pretty sure they all use corn sweeteners now. Because the US refuses to buy sugar fro Cuba, sugar costs more in the states than it does elsewhere and it just can;t compete with corn syrup. The old, old classic coke, the stuff that used to come in the little 8-oz glass bottles: that stuff had real sugar, and that's why it was so excellent. Or so I'm told.

And most of the coke they sell now is the original coke, which they had to bring back after the New Coke fiasco. I don't think you could find "Coke II" (the new stuff) around here if you tried.

I don't know about that, dr. M. The taste is still different from the old stuff! Even "Classic Coke" tastes different from the original stuff, with the cane sugar. I just drank some of the old stuff (don't worry, I still have one bottle left) and one difference from the old stuff is the new (current) Coke doesn't make your teeth squeek! For some reason, the good stuff ("original" Coke) used to make your teeth squeek. Probably the acids and/or the sugars.
But, Mm, mm, MMMMMM! Was it good! I didn't realize how much I'd liked the taste of the old stuff! I don't think I'll ever sell the bottle I have... I'll probably invite a bunch of friends over in another decade, or so, and have a party-- We'll each get a shotglass-full and just sip it. Slowly. So as to enjoy every drop, every molecule of the delicious liquid.:p

I remember chocolate cokes and cherry cokes. I liked both, equally. I don't know if that makes me amateur or hard core. But, from the can, I'm a Pepsi man. From the fountain, they both taste the same to me. I'm sure a lot of that is the syrup/carbination mixture settings.

I liked both Coke and Pepsi in the older days. I'm not completely sure that when the cola war thing fizzled for Coke, they didn't go back to the "real thing". It just doesn't taste the same to me. Out of the bottle (showing my age, here) I like both Coke and Pepsi, too. But, from the can, Coke tastes like it's flat. Don't ask me why, but that's how it tastes. I hear the Coke folks think Pepsi tastes flat from the can, too. Well, we're all different.

But, I agree on the vanilla Coke thing. YUCK! It just doesn't taste right to me. Maybe with vanilla ice cream it would dilute the after taste, but why not just Coke and vanilla ice cream, then? Too much vanilla could be over kill for me.

I'd rather have chocolate Coke, with or without ice cream. Or, is there a vanilla Pepsi? Not that I'd like that, either.

I think it could be my tastes are geared for the old time fountain days, and the mass produced products just don't measure up.

How about Phosphates?

My mother once told me about "cherry phosphates." YUMMM!
Those are really tasty! I don't know, maybe they're just a regional delicacy (being from Chicago) but, man, those things are good!!!
Or, how about Green River (lime flavored soda pop)? OH, my gosh! THAT is THE BEST tasting stuff in the world!!! The BEST! And then, if you ever go to Milwaukee, WI, be sure to stop into a Frozen Custard joint! Mmmmm! Heaven tastes like that stuff! Believe me! Mix in a little Green River with some vanilla custard and you'll be hooked for LIFE!!! The stuff's more addicting than crack-cocaine! Pure horse ("book 'em, Dano"):D can't compare to the sensations one derives from a great Lime Soda made with these ingredients!!! You can try to find better but you'll always come-up short!!!
